The Risk

  • The risk of precipitating a heart attack during normal sex in one's home is no greater than the risk during other daily activities such as riding a car in a crowded traffic-infested market place which raises the heart rate to as high or higher level than during normal sexual activity.
  • What is important are the circumstances attendant on sexual act.
  • Sexual activities carried out in the confines of the home in the marital bed with a sympathetic wife is just another human function.
  • Contrast it with clandestine sex in a hotel room with a strange partner with whom one's potency has to be proved; there may be much smoking and drinking prior to act; further, the anxiety and fear of being found out coupled with feelings of guilt make matters worst.
  • Naturally, the chances of precipitating a heart attack during sex under clandestine circumstances become much higher.  Most of sudden cardiac deaths that have occurred under such circumstances. 

Sex stimulation by Drugs.

  • Normal persons do not need drugs like Viagra for sexual stimulation.
  • Used in old age, it may stimulate the sexual appetite to levels which may be dangerous for an elderly person's heart.
  • Viagra, combined with clandestine sex  for an elderly person can prove to be lethal combination.
  • It is particularly dangerous for patients who are taking organic nitrates such as nitroglycerine, Sorbitrte, Monotrate etc., which are used for heart disease.  Viagra can produce a sudden and dangerous fall of blood pressure in them. 

Precautions,

  • Avoid sex activities soon after meals when much blood is diverted to the stomach for purposes of digestion, leaving less for the use of the heart, wait for at least two hours after meals.
  • In certain positions are found too strenuous and  precipitate  symptoms like breathlessness of chest pain, change the position to one less strenuous and let your partner play the more active role.  And consult your Doctor.
  • Cardioprotective drugs such as propranolol are usually prescribed after a heart attack or for Hypertension.  A tablet an hour or so before the act may prevent the heart rate and blood pressure from shooting up too high.  Consult your Physician who will be able to advice you on the correct dose for you after making certain that there is no contra-indication for its use by you.
  • No clandestine Sex.
  • No Viagra like drugs.
