A Dog ...Man's best Friend ....But Should He Come Firsrt?
In my state if an animal - of any kind really - be it a dog-cat-rabbit -ferret or what have you is in any way mistreated - it's owner can be charged with a felony. Felony animal abuse is on the news quite frequently. Sometimes its founded and other times its a busy body neighbor with nothing else to do. At any rate - if one complaint is called in you can bet the Animal Control will be banging on your door in Less Than 24 hours!
I once set a kitten over a fence. now mind you, I didn't throw the kitten, beat the kitten or anything like that . I leaned over the fence as far as I could - about an inch from the ground and set the kitten down. He landed on his feet and ran off to play. within 12 hours time I had the animal control at my door telling me he had one complaint that I threw the kitten - and that - if the complaint was founded - it was a felony. I explained to him what I did and didn't do showed him the kitten who was happy healthy and fine - Over the next several days the officer came by another 3 times just to be sure the kitten "was still o.k." Since nothing could be founded from the complaint - he finally stopped coming around.
What happens if a complaint of abuse or neglect is called in for an elderly person or persons who are truly is being abused or neglected on a daily basis?
Well , It typically takes 24 to 48 hours before someone from senior services checks up on the situation and if founded - at least another 2 or three weeks and a few more complaints before something is actually done about the situation - if anything is done at all.
I actually had to threaten a congressional act before getting help with my in laws who were suffering an abusive situation. Even then, was only told how to fix the situation myself. all the work was on me - I was just steered in the right direction as to what to do.
My dog dissapeared and it didn't even take an entire day before she was picked up by the animal control and swooped off to the pound. She had a growth on her leg - it wasn't life threatening or anything - still she was taken into surgery - the growth removed and when I went to pick her up she was in the dogie spa. Awww , that was cute and I was very ,very happy to have her back all fixed up,healthy and happy.
How long does it take to find that 90 year old with dementia or Alzheimer's who just drove off in their car one day ?
Well, he/she drove off "three days ago" and it just now made the news - wow - my dog was found in less than 24 hours
I went to work at an adult foster home caring for 4 elderly ladies on the weekends.
the owner of the foster home was 72 , on dialysis, with a heart condition, and waiting for a kidney transplant. She also had dementia, but guess what, she was a caregiver for the other 4 ladies!
Well, not really, actually she was a resident there herself. But for senior services, listed herself as a caregiver. since there are supposed to be two people on duty at all times - the ill owner was one of them.
I was like ... what the heck is going on here. I was hired to care for 4 ladies with two on duty at all times and I'm actually caring for five by myself!
To make matters worse, when the owner received any kind of bad news from her doctor, or felt bad herself - or had an aggressive upset with her dementia she would come upstairs and yell and scream at the residents.
One resident had bruises on her legs, arms, and had a black eye. I was told she fell. O.k, so the next week-end I go in and she has even more bruises.
"She fell again." But the owner won't allow anyone to report it.
By my third week-end one resident was so terrified of the owner I had to promise her I wouldn't let the lady yell at her in order to convince her to go to the breakfast table
O.k I can't work in this crap anymore it's like, emotionally disturbing
So I talk to the manager, she takes some notes , calls and makes a complaint to senior services, who, by the way are fully aware of the owners medical condition and have been looking the other way for quite some time
Senior services sends someone out to "interview the residents." Wow, like they are going to say anything when they are scared to death.
Come on now where is the common sense, they never ask people who work there what is going on - because if they did -they would be forced to do their job - so, they interview the residents who they know are too scared to say anything. There, they did something, right - yey.
The managers hands are tied - every caregiver there wants their paycheck ya know
So, the next week-end I go in - nothing has changed - that's it I can't work here anymore - by this point I'm emotionally drained from watching this crap happen to people - forget a paycheck I can't sleep at night after watching this. Myself - I would rather apply for food-stamps or find another job - or starve
Since I quit the place the owner has grabbed and shaken an employee who is now ready to quit herself. she did make a complaint to Senior Services - did it do her any good? No of course not.
Two complaints made on this facility within a 3 week period. A facility that is caring for the elderly with an owner who is elderly and - who is basically a case of self abuse and neglect herself - common sense would tell anyone this lady isn't capable of caring for herself, let alone anyone else
But hey, don't kick the dog, beat the rabbit, smack the pet snake, cause buddy if you do your going to jail and being charged with a felony! All within 12 hours time.
Please don't take this wrong I don't think animal abuse is o.k - In fact I know its not , the point of this article is to show how animals come before our elderly citizens and in my opinion it should be the opposite ... Or maybe at least equal would be good also.

O.k captain I did it all for you :) X
Good Luck xx
Amazing story! Would be wonderful if the people are as well looked after as the animals in your state! Must be some great animal lovers up there to make such strict laws. Maybe you should forward this to your legislators to get them going with respect to protecting the elderly. Good luck!
The abuse of the elderly really gets to me. I believe it should be taken much more seriously. Animal abuse? It does not deserve 1/4 of the attention it gets. As in your situation, no crime was committed, but someone got paid to make your life miserable, all because of some lying neighbor with an overactive imagination!
Actually, I could have used a bit of this animal abuse stuff to my advantage a few years ago when my dementia neighbor kept yelling at my dog! ;)
I am so hot about this my hair is on fire! If I could just smack someone silly I would. I LOVE animals! BUT...have we gone freakin' berzerk? What is happening to our society that we are treating our grandmas and grandpas with such disdain? I am so sorry to hear this.
I think they are equal animals have feelings and emotions just like people.
Ofcourse if I had to choose between the life of a dog and human i'd pick the human but it wouldn't be an easy choice!
Here is an update for ya - after months of this - I just heard today the place is finally closing down - though its still open right now - hopefully its just not a rumor
I can understand your concern about the treatment of the elderly but to diminish the inhumanity of abusing animals to make your point actually detracts from your objective. It is like saying that if you don't support genetic testing that you therefore are a proponent of childhood cancer. How we treat animals is a direct reflection of how we treat ourselves and others. To think we are more important than anything else is egotistical and contributes to a self absorbed, egocentric society. One that believes it is better to prop up a person on machines and pills and to warehouse them out of sight than to care for them and let them live and die in dignity. I doubt you would find too many animal lovers who abuse people but I am fairly certain you could find a strong correlation between those who abuse animals and a propensity towards violence to other humans.
That being said, it was an interesting HUB and your point is well taken and your outrage justified.
I'm the kind of person who says things point blank how they are. No sugar coating like many people want . Simply the plain cold hard facts. Being that kind of person I have found that for many , the truth hurts. My writing of this hub doesn’t, in any way diminish inhumanity of abusing animals. It simply makes a comparison between the differing treatment of animals and elderly citizens. And it can be backed up with fact! From what you said it sounds like if you were drowning and your animal was drowning at the same time you would want for the rescue team to save your animal first and then come back for you even if it meant you could drown before they got back. Heroic - I guess but do you really feel that way? From your response it seems It could go both ways - As a matter of fact -I don't support genetic testing, the government has gone too far and actually hides behind curing disease to meet a different objective. unfourtananatly the many people who like the sugar coatings actually believe them because it's what they want to hear and then they justify believing the sugar coated stuff. Your response is exactly like this –justifying by talking about propping people up on pills and warehousing them out of site -not letting them die with dignity. My hub didn’t mention any of this- that’s another hubb - for another day. I am at home with 24 hour Alzheimer’s care have given up a career in order to keep something like that from happening to my family member – so to make the accusation that I believe in something like this is unfounded. That being said - I appreciate your point of view and comments on my hubb -
My pole is rather interesting - so far 40% of people say that animals and the elderly are equal -so I would take that to mean that 40% of those poled are vegetarians - or else those polled like to eat elderly people too - neat idea for another hubb don't ya think
Someone famous said that a society can be judged by how it treat animals. This isn't always true. I love animals and have rescued many. I do, however, place more worth on the life of a person.
I wish our animal laws in GA were stricter, though. In some areas, it's hard to get the animal cops to do anything about even gross neglect and blatant cruelty.
Great hub and good food for thought!
Thanks, my son was born in GA. lived there for a few years - love the people down south :)
Its a strange situation. If you have a dog/cat/pet sperm whale etc you instantly love all other dogs/cats/sperm whales and you become a 'lover' of that animal or indeed animals in general. However if you have a grandma you love that grandma as she is yours but everyone elses grandmas are their problem, unless you happen to be a people lover, but it would seem that there are far more animal lovers than people lovers
well, on my pole the elderly citizen is getting 58% of the vote now
In our society, there is no respect anymore for ANY life - neither animals nor humans. Seems there are plenty of animal activists. But not as many human rights activists? I guess people are scared to "get involved", and many times the victims of abuse are unable to speak up for themselves.
I myself have reported elder abuse many times at facilities where I have worked and observed it. Nothing was ever done. It makes me very angry. We need to make more noise and get our institutions to respect and protect ALL the helpless among us. Humans and animals. All are worthy of respect and dignity.
I don't know as if I would compare animals and humans, or question which is more important. But I do understand where you are coming from. Of course, humans would have first priority. But abuse to ANY helpless being is despicable and intolerable.
You are right , lots of noise,, the more the better , Thanks

I think people respect animals more because they are "cuter" or "more innocent". What people forget is they have nowhere near the level of consciousness that humans have, and we can suffer in far greater and more profound ways than animals. Humans and animals are not equal, humans are better and more important. Don't get me wrong, I strongly believe in animal rights and I am glad that Animal Control is so quick to respond, but the fact that it takes longer to respond to humans is horrible.
