Electric Vehicle Conversion Motor Considerations
67Now that you've decided on building your own electric vehicle your going to need to learn about the motors that can be used in an electric vehicle.
Some of the considerations that have to be made when choosing to install an electric motor are:
Your choice of Ac Motors or DC Motors
How large a motor is required for your type of vehicle
Should you choose a car or a truck for the conversion process
With a good set of qualified plans you will be able to determine the proper battery capacity that is needed for the vehicles weight that will be converted. This will also impact the distance you can travel and the top speed of the vehicle.
The heavier the vehicle the shorter the distance it will be able to travel, therefor if your looking to travel long distances a lighter vehicle is required. For our conversions we have chosen small light trucks, for their size and strength.
A small truck can easily handle the 20 or so deep cycle batteries that will be needed to travel a distance of 200 miles at a top speed of 50 mph. For a car more consideration must be undertaken, but there are plenty of cars that will also meet this criteria.
When it comes to the choice of your vehicles motor you can follow the lead of most major car companies that are using AC Motors in their electric vehicles because they ar lighter for the same power output of a DC Motor. They provide a breaking recharging system that transfers energy back to the batteries when the breaking system is engaged.
The drawback here is that the energy from the battery is DC or Direct Current and the AC Motors require AC or Alternating Current To operate, this requires an additional and expensive device for changing the direct current into alternating current or a DC to AC converter which is not an easy installation.
The DC or Direct Current Motor option is not only cheaper but is much easier to install and is why we have chosen to implement it in our Electric Vehicle Conversion Plans. Since cost is a major consideration of this project the plans show you how to find free DC Motors and Deep Cycle Batteries, which will save you a great deal of money.
When you know where to look you can find good recycled DC Motors that will last you a very long time. The size of these motors should be between 9 and 13 inches; this size range works best and has the power delivery we need to drive the vehicles of our choice. With expected fuel prices expected to double by next year it's time you got ready to start your own vehicle conversion project.
