Survival of the fittest

We all at some point heard about evolution and know atleast something like someone who is strong will survive, but people who are into evolution and genetics know a bit more about this and I personally wanna make some points here as I am into this field a lot. I myself being a population gentisist, I like to make a few strong points here to explain what it is how its still working while we have no idea whats going on in this present world.

There was a study recently published in this month about Bluemoon or Great eggfly butterflies, Hypolimnas bolinna. The male adult butterflies were dying due to a detrimental gene from Mother being passed to all its eggs that has strong effect on male eggs there by killing all males as they grow. To be clear, these genes were from bacteria known as Wolbachia. The genes passs from them to female mothers and ultimately pass to all its babies. So when males develop this gene stops their growth and kills them.

There was reduction in population in males over years in this part of the world, South Pacific island of Savaii. A recent research by Sylvain Charlat, UC, Berkeley showed that the males have increased in population in large proportions. How?

They have developed resistance to this gene and grown and mated with females and there by increased in numbers enormously. This is one of the live examples of evolution at work.

This research involves many scientific terms and principles that need to be explained. I will make an effort to put more information in this or my other scientific hubs as the time moves on. Keep reading.
