Ergonomic Desk Chair

I've been working in a home office environment for the last seven years, and found out rather quickly it's imperative to have a quality and comfortable ergonomic chair to do my work and writing from.

There's nothing worse than sitting in a chair for hours today where you experience pain, backaches and many times fatigue, as you're being more forcibly propped up from sitting rather than having an ergonomic desk chair shape and fit to your body type for comfort.

Even you've found some good looking chairs on the Internet, make sure you try one like it at an office supply or furniture store before throwing you money down on it. Looks surely don't equate with comfort, and while design may look great, it shouldn't be the deciding factor in an ergonomic office chair.

So try before you buy. Depending on how much you have to spend on an office chair, you want to look beyond the price to other things like the construction of the chair, what materials it's made out of, and finally the price that goes with it.

Along with looking online, other places you can find good deals are at places that sell used furniture like consignment shops or places that buy and sell used furniture.

Do your research on ergonomic desk chairs

We've already talked about materials and supporting your back for maximum working comfort with an office chair, but other things to look at could be how the armrests are placed and what they're made out of.

A current chair I've been using for some time is starting to feel uncomfortable from the positioning of the armrests, and so I'm thinking of using a different chair, as I work on the computer for hours a day, and need comfort in that area.

Look into details of features related to your back support

When sitting for such a long period of time, part of the ergonomics of any good office chair needs to include support for all part of your back; including the lower, middle and upper back.

If any one of these suffer, you'll never feel comfortable while doing work over a long period of time, day-after-day.

What's important to look at are height adjustments and how the tilt mechanism works with you. Normal recommendations are that you should sit with a slight recline of your back while working in an ergonomic office chair at your desk.

How are the seat pans set up?

If you're not familiar with the term 'seat pan,' it's referring to that part at the front of the seat that includes a waterfall or rounded edge look.

What that does is keep that area behind your knees from being crunched and result in loss of circulation. Also check to see that there is adequate room for your hips to move, as too little can result in you needing to lean forward with little support for you thighs.

Some ergonomic desk chairs offer backward and forward adjustment tilt so you can find your sweet spot. While it's not necessary if you find the right chair, it definitely helps when taking all things into consideration, and you can't find a office desk chair that fits you exactly.

Multiple Ergonomic chair support

One thing many people looking for a good office chair miss is taking into consideration the variety of tasks they may be performing.

For example, you could be talking, writing and reading, among other things, and each one could require a different adjustment and setting to make you more comfortable.

Obviously there are times when you're surprised by events so you can't really adjust it like that, but there can be set conference calls, customer calls, reading or writing time, and it's there that you can set and adjust things for your best comfort.

Ergonomic desk chair material decisions

The type of material or fabric your ergonomic office chair is made of makes a big difference in a buying decision, as there is a give and take in it depending on what's most important to you.

If price and decent comfort is most important, then chairs with cloth as a covering are the best; they also breathe better than other fabrics.

With leather or vinyl chairs, it's much easier to clean, which is important in connection with time and in some cases - odor. Vinyl can also be colder or warmer depending on the time of the year, but in transitional seasons can be the best as far as temperature levels go.

All things considered though, usually a ventilated and permeable material is the best fabric to use, and it shapes to the body nicely.

Height of the chair

You should have the ability to adjust your chair with gas lifts of pneumatic levers which can allow for the most optimized positioning of your feed, legs and body.

Feet should be able to be flat on the floor while your thighs are level with the floor. The wrists should also be allowed to be straight for the maximum level of comfort while typing.

You want a safe, stable chair

As most of you probably know, back injuries of most types occur from twisting rather than heavy lifting, as some think. So when considering an ergonomic desk chair, look for wheels that are allowed to swivel so there isn't any excessive movement or jarring when you reach or turn to get something.

Also look for a chair base with five points which will protect you from tipping over if you recline backwards at all. Being able to lock into several positions when reclining is also an important part of a good ergonomic office chair.

what type of floor will the chair be on?

Finally, you want to consider the type of office flooring you'll be working on when choosing an ergonomic chair.

If you will be working on a hard floor, get chair casters which are rubber coated, for a carpeted floor, go with hard caster which won't get bogged down as easily.
