Proper exercise is important to prevent a Jack Russell from becoming moody or destructive.

Jack russell dogs may be small, but don't let their size fool you. Underneath that sweet exterior is a hyper dog that seems tohave a never ending battery of energy. Therefore, if this is the dog breed for you, it is imperative you do everything you canto ensure he receives the exercise and attention he requires. If not, your favorite household items and pretty yard and garden will suffer the consequences.

Due to the fact that jack russell dogs are high energy, does this mean that they are not ideal apartment pets? Not at all, on the contrary, jack russells can be excellent apartment pets, as long as you exercise and play with them regularly. You need to understand that although their tiny size may make you think that this canine will be happy to lie down on the couch all day; this pooch was originally bred to participate in fox hunting. Their strong body and tenacious nature is not compatible with inactivity.

What type of exercise should I provide my jack russell dogs? There are different ways to give your jack a good work out, such as:

  • Walking - Take your dog out for a brisk walk at least twice per day. These walks should be a minimum of 20 minutes. It's also not a bad idea to jog, as this will burn your dog's energy faster, and can also help keep you in sound health.
  • Backyard - Give your jack russell the freedom of the backyard, so he can run around or do what he pleases while enjoying the outdoors. However, remember that this particular rascal loves to dig, bark and jump, so you will need to make sure your yard is secure, as well as maintain a watchful eye on him.
  • Play time - Jack russell dogs love to play Frisbee, and fetch balls, and they also love spending time with you. Playing a fetch game with your dog is an ideal way to allow him to burn energy, and bond with you. He'll love the attention, and you can physically participate as much (run with the dog), or as little (sit in a chair) as you want.
  • Dog trials - If you are looking for a new hobby, consider training your jack for dog trials, which is typically comprised of three divisions: confirmation, go-to-ground and racing. You might find you'll like the competition, it will allow you and your pal further bonding experience, and it exercises both the dogs body and mind.

There are many ways to keep your jack russell dogs active and happy. The key to a calmer and content terrier involves regular exercise, obedience training and, of course, affection.
