EXPLOSION
Looking out of my window into the night sky tonight there is a glow about half a mile from where I live, after a massive bang there is a massive fire at the ICI explosives factory in Ardeer Stevenston, Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland. I don't know many details as yet but i will keep you informed as I learn more.
A spokeswoman said ten fire engines were in attendance at the site.
She added that it was unlikely that anyone would be evacuated from the area, although it has not yet been confirmed if anyone was inside the plant.
Their was 12 workers in the plant at the time with no casualties
Police say two 14 year old boys and a ten year old have been reported to the Children's Panel in connection with the incident.
sorry about the poor pictures taken on my mobile phone from my closed window.

thanks Wayjay am waiting to see if any actions will be taken regarding evacuation but no sign of anything yet.....jimmy
be careful! wow that is some explosion.
hopefully all will be well with you and your family. Also prayers for any workers and firemen involved in this disaster.
i never heard it or seen anything and live in kilwinning
I've heard it was the nitrocellulose works that went up. Loud explosions and visible flames were seen from Irvine moor. Not much about it on BBC news, etc.
Sounds crazy. Stay safe.
That's cool that you got some pictures with your mobile.
I wonder which came first, the explosion or the fire?
I am not too sure Ralph I didn't notice anything until I heard the explosion but the fire could have been before that
things seem to have calmed down though now but there is a very strong security presence and the industrial estate is closed off.....jimmy
I was fascinated to read this item. My late father who was born in Stevenston in 1913, had a vivid lifelong memory of the large explosion which occured at the Ardeer plant in (I believe) 1915, even though he was only two years old at the time. His own farther worked as a mercantile clerk at the Ardeer plant, and when the explosions began, his mother carried him out in her arms into the night across the sandy links near the beach to watch the enormous pyrotechnic displays in the distance. According to my father, the 1915 explosion was said to have been caused by shelling from a german submarine.
Interesting account. Glad you and your family are ok. It seems to have been quite a summer for you - first the attack on the airport and now this. Your pictures were good considering you were using a mobile device from a half a mile away. Take care and you and your family stay safe.

Wow, Jimmy! That definitely does not sound good. Be prepared to leave the area in case it worsens. Be careful and take care of the wife and the little ones. Please keep us informed, but above all, stay safe.
