One of the most common complaints of iPod users since day one is the battery life does not last as long as advertised. While this was truly the case in the beginning, now the battery life lasts as long if not longer than advertised. However, there are still steps to take to ensure it continues to last long. By following these simple steps, you will keep your iPod battery running as long as humanly possible. While in most cases, this can be upwards of two years, keep in mind that depending upon individual usage, you may get a lot less battery life than you bargained for.

Quick Tips

- Always use the hold button when not in use

- Only charge the iPod when needed

- Do not leave the iPod connected to the charger after fully charged

Make sure you turn your iPod off when not in use. While it will turn off automatically after a pre-set amount of time, during the time it is still on but no in use, it is eating up battery life. The hold button, on the top of your iPod, will also preserve battery life whether the iPod is on or off. When on, it makes sure you cannot change any settings or accidentally flip through songs, this cuts down on needless button mashing that uses up battery life. While off, it puts the hard drive disk inside the iPod into a hibernation-like mode which preserves battery life as well.

If for some reason you think your iPod's battery is not running to capacity, you can now get a new battery through Apple or you can replace it yourself. While replacing it yourself voids your warranty, it can also give you a quick fix if you know what you are doing or take it to a shop. If you use Apple's battery replacement, they will replace it for you for a fee, but the work is covered under a limited warranty should something go wrong.

If you take care of your iPod, utilize the hold feature and make sure to charge it to capacity, your battery life will be extended beyond the normal scope out of the box. Taking care of your iPod is a surefire way to keep the battery in good condition, and keep the unit itself working.
