Good eyesight is not all that difficult to have and maintain because the majority of eye problems that happen are really easy to prevent or to fix. But what really is paramount is that you should have your eyes checked out regularly.

The exams will show you if there are changes in your vision or visual acuity and they can also detect the more serious eye conditions and prevent them from getting worse.

How many times should I have my eyes checked?

1. Infants eyes should always be checked during their regular medical checkups

2. Children between the ages of 3 to 4 years old should have at least one check up every year.

3. 5 year olds to 18 year olds should have their eyes examined every 18 months

4. From ages 19 till 40, eye exams should be done only if you have symptoms of eye problems

5. Ages 41 to 60 years old should have their eyes checked every 3 years with tests for glaucoma.

6. Ages 61 and above should have their eyes looked at every two years.

Who should I go to for my eye check ups?

We have 3 types of eye - care specialists whose jobs range from examining our eyes, treating our eye problems and provide the necessary tools for our eye- care needs.

1. The Opthalmologist - is a certified doctor of medicine who is specialized in medical and surgical care for our eyes. Armed with a broad range of expertise, opthalmologists can test and prescribe corrective lenses. They also provide diagnosis and treatment for all sorts of eye problems ranging from minor infections to treatment of diseases that can cause blindness.

2. The Optomerist - is also licensed to diagnose, treat and manage conditions of the human eye and visual systems. Although they are not medical doctors they have suffcient training to diagnose and treat certain eye diseases. But they always refer cases to the opthalmologists once the eye condition falls out of their scope of expertise.

3. The Optician - does not test vision or prescribe treatment for any sort of eye condition, but they are the technicians that fill prescriptions for your glasses and contact lenses.

Your eyes and the computer

At any given time, there are around 70 million computer users wolrldwide. Many of these people spend their workday staring at their computer monitors and many of them also suffer from eye strain, visual fatigue, headaches and eye irritations.

Clinical findings show that people who average 7 hours a day looking at computer monitors may contract premature loss in the eye's ability to focus or Presbyopia.

Eye care professionals encourage us  to follow these suggestions in order to prevent getting presbyopia.

1. If you already have corrective lenses, you may need to get a prescription for a pair of glasses that you will use while looking at the monitor. Regular glasses wont work in this environment as they are designed to focus at around 18 inches, which will not function well for computer terminal work as they are set further away.

2. Choose non reflective glass screens and minimize glare from other light sources like the window or the light fixture.

3. Keep your screen at a 10 to 15 degree angle below the eye level position.

4. Take regular breaks by frequently looking away from the screen as this will rest your eyes momentarily.

Eye makeup recommendations

Although eyeliners, eyeshadows and mascara do not pose any real danger to the users, some people get eye infections from eye makeup. the following simple recommendations should be followed to avoid getting eye infections:

1. Wash your hands before applying makeup to your eyes. Your fingers do carry bacteria.

2. Keep applicators and containers clean, always wipe your makeup area with a damp cloth to keep the dust to a minimum.

3.Always take care not to scratch your eyeball when using your applicator. So dont use it in a moving vehicle.

4. Purchase mascara in small quantity containers as they only have a 3-4 month shelf life. It is the most contaminated eye makeup due to the fact that the preservatives only last a few months.

I heard that, staring at computer for long hours , your eyes dryness will occur. Is it the same thing you are mentioning as prebyopia?

hi sarovia,

presbyopia symptoms differ from the dryness that you mentioned. The dryness of the eyes I can attribute to the airconditioning in your office and the infrequency of your blinking. Blinking causes the eyes to lubricate.
