I know a hit song when I hear it

If I had enough money to own my own record label I would have no doubts at all about signing Spanish singer-songwriter Lidia Guevara and American hip-hop and rap artist Mikey J. Coming from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, these two singer-songwriters have some of the best songs I have heard in a very long time and it is not just me that is so impressed.

Mikey J has won several contests on Famecast.com and appeared in SPIN magazine as a result of this. Achieving this takes a lot of votes and that means Mikey has a lot of fans out there.

He is, not surprisingly, currently being courted by the Myspace label and if he gets enough support from his fans it looks likely he will be chosen for release on the social networking site's own label.

I am not at all surprised because whilst he sings and composes rap and hip-hop his lyrical approach is very different to most acts in those genres. Mikey is a poet at heart and his influences are not just other rap and hip-hop stars but many writers and artists from other genres of music.

This has given him a wide perspective to draw upon and Mikey has an amazing love song called For You. I have played it over and over and was so inspired by hearing it I wrote a hub entirely devoted to Mikey and his songwriting.

Same thing happened with Lidia Guevara. I heard her songs after she contacted me at Myspace and was so impressed that I wrote a hub about her too and have played her song Nadie Como Tú (No one like you) over and over and over again. This is what happens to hit songs - fans put them on repeat play.

Lidia has recently recorded a live performance in a club in Spain and her fans there know the song Nadie Como Tú and love it so much you can hear some of them singing along with her in true pop anthem style. Now imagine her on a big stage somewhere after the song had become a hit - I can see it in my mind's eye. Can't you?

Lidia has already tasted real success in the pop music world before when she was the voice of the Spanish group Bhangra. However, now she is venturing out on her own and at the moment, according to her Myspace page, she is unsigned. Lidia really knows how to sing and writes some brilliant songs so I really don't think she will be without securing a deal for much longer.

What does a smash hit record need? It has to be catchy, it has to appeal to the listener's emotions. A love song is always a good bet. Mikey J and Lidia Guevara both have songs that fit this category very well indeed!

So my advice to any label owners out there reading this, if you want to release a hit record then check out Mikey J and Lidia Guevara and sign them if you can before somebody else does! Mark my words, these two incredible singer-songwriters are going to be big stars!

There is a lot of great talent out there. For every person that's noticed as a great performer there are a million that are just as good.

Well now you have, Nicomp, and my job is done! lol

Yes, Pete, you are very right and I know hundreds of unsigned acts who are excellent. I am one myself! lol Part of the problem, especially today, is the question has to be asked: are the acts and their songs saleable in quantity because someone has to risk paying a lot of money on a release and promotion and marketing to find out. Labels are generally very unwilling to risk it and few acts get deals because of this. It just so happens that Mikey and Lidia already have fairly big fanbases as well as top songs and this is important because it means all those fans are potential customers. That Mikey has done so well on Famecast has probably attracted Myspace's interest. Lidia is already well known for having been in Bhangra - a group who had a Spanish hit album.

I like giving a hand to singers and musicians I personally really like and have already done several other hubs on some others.

Thanks for sharing these two interesting acts.

Luckily for them as the record industry continues to evolve and erode, they won't have to wait too long to cut up some trax and have them published.

It's amazing what you can do with $5000 these days. ;)
