Introduction

Things have changed a lot over the ages and one things for certain - everything has gotten faster and quicker. No wonder we are all stressed, there is always too much work and too little time. We hardly get any time to eat correctly or to exercise regularly (or even any at all). An with the world telling us we can have it all, we think that we should do it all.

This is putting a lot of stress on all of us, and it shows most on our tummies. Apart from the lack of exercise and us sitting behind desks all day, stress is one of the biggest reasons for the size of our bellies.

You see, when we stress our bodies produces excess cortisol. Primarily, this excess production of cortisol is a survival technique that enables us to fight in the face of danger (this is called the primal fight of flight reaction). In the face of danger (or periods of high stress) the excess cortisol raises our energy levels in the form of raised blood sugar levels. As times have changed, our stress comes mainly from work related issues .

So none of this excess energy is burned off, and this energy is then stored as fat (mostly in the tummy area)!

So how can you stop this cortisol from invading your tummy? There are various things you can do to lower your stress level as well as increasing your stress coping abilities.

Here are four things you can do now to stop the cortisol abdominal fat cycle in it tracks:

Yoga

This age old practice dating back more than 5000 years back brings complete peacefulness of mind and body. Yoga also reduces stress and anxiety. Try Hatha Yoga as it is (in my opinion) the best for stress management.

Meditation

Meditating regularly will strengthen your nervous system and will increase your stress coping abilities and your feeling of well being. Practicing regular meditation will leave you feeling permanently peacefully.

Any form of regular exercise that gets your heart racing

Exercise is a great way to reduce anxiety and depression. And will do wonders for your stress level. It's also said to increase the production of the "happy hormone". Aim to get 3-4 workouts in a week

Pilates

Pilates is also a great way to increase your stress coping ability. It also strengthens your core (your abs, back and hip flexors), and will give you flat abs, and a leaner, longer look.

The results

When you implement one or more of the above stress coping techniques, you will reduce the impact of stress and over a period of time you will learn to handle stress better. The benefits of this will be a sleeker, flatter midsection while decreasing your chance of life threatening diseases. Makes you want to start with one of the above immediately, doesn't it?
