Father's Day Gift Guide: The Fishing Father
68Preface:
Father's day is the one day a year that we get to thank Dad for doing such a good job with us. Dad was there for all of the major moments in our life, like riding our bike, the first day of school, or wehn we just needed someone to talk to. Being a Father is a big job and sometimes Dad just needs to relax.
If your Dad relaxes by fishing, then what better way to thank Dad than by providing him with fishing equipment for his favorite hobby? If Dad enjoys fishing then you are in the right place because chances are that something below may be just what he needs to be able to relax this Father's day and reel in that trophy fish that he has always dreamed of.

Knives:
A great knife is an important tool for a fisherman. They are used for cutting line, bait, and even for doing some work on the rod itself! The knife needs to be sturdy, and capable of standing all types of weather including exposure to salt water. My favorite brand of knife is Leatherman. They make some of the most popular multi-tools and knives on the market. The best part about Leatherman is their availability. Most Wal-Marts carry the Leatherman brand, and you can also get them at Bass Pro Shops.
If you are ever unsure about what to buy, you can read reviews for various knives on Amazon.com, or ask one of the associates at Bass Pro Shop for their opinion. Never purchase blindly, always ask someone knowledgable about the purchase at the very least. I have also written a hub that outlines purchasing the right knife. You can view it here.
Debris' Warnings:
Fisherman are with lures, the way women are with their shoes. Certain brands, certain colors, certain weights, and certain styles are only acceptable. Some fishermen are vehemently against artificial lures as well. If your husband is always going to the bait shop to pick up worms, shrimp, or crickets, then he is probably not an artificial bait guy, and you may want to steer clear of this idea.
Fishing Lures:
Fishing lures are a great idea for any fisherman, but beware: there is a lot more to lures than you may think. Certain baits only work with certain fish in certain lighting conditions.
Many people think that they are all just pieces of plastic that trick the fish, but that's not the case. Even if that were the case, fishermen still would not believe it. The best thing you can do is try to figure out which of the baits that he uses most and try to get one that is similar, or talk to the sales associate and they can point you in the right direction.
Fishing Sonar & GPS:
If Dad has a boat then a very nice addition is a fishing sonar and GPS setup. This is a device that he can attach to his boat that will show him where the fish are underwater, and he can mark his favorite locations as he finds them so he can return again! This is a newer technology that has been bursting onto the scene and is a really great machine to have at your disposal.
If a Sonar/GPS combination is out of your price range then you can look into a standard GPS system that will let him mark locations that he may like. He won't be able to see where the fish are underwater, but being able to get back to the same spots that you like is still a really neat gift!
Watch:
A good watch can be a nice tool to have. Besides the obvious ability to know what time it is, watches can also have built in calendars. I use mine frequently! A good watch should be able to stand up against the rigors that a fisherman may put it through like bumping it against hard surfaces, submerging it in water, constant exposure to sweat, and a constant beating by the Sun. There are many great watch manufacturers out there, and Dad may already have a favorite, but a good watch is always a nice thing to have for any Dad, not only for a fisherman.
When shopping for a watch look for a sturdy wristband. This is obviously very important because a weak band means that the watch will most likely end up in the water! If Dad has vision problems, then you may want to get him a watch with a larger face on it as well. Larger faces open you up to many more options including having calendars and even a stop watch functionality. Watches that include stopwatches are called Chronographs. For a fisherman, one of the most important features is the water resistance, and this means you should be very clear with any sales associates. Let them know that you need a watch that can handle that kind of abuse.
Search Bass Pro Shop For More Ideas:
Some of these ideas may not be too practical for you, or maybe you want something more unique. If that is the case then browse the BassProShop's website and see what you can find. You can even find a location near you and go in to ask your questions. If there is not a Bass Pro Shop near you then most any major fishing store should be able to help you in finding the perfect gift for Father's Day. There are a lot of options, and some can break the bank. Make sure that you take every precaution when purchasing something. Read reviews, ask trusted people, and do as much research as possible.
