What are you afraid of?

There are many things that we humans fear, sometimes due to an incident which has traumatized us in the past. Fear itself is a very natural human emotion but our reactions to it can often be uncomfortable and debilitating in certain environments. If these fears turn into phobias, the problem becomes even more difficult to cope with, occasionally leading to the person seeking out professional help to overcome that phobia.

Some common things that people are afraid of are; heights, closed in places, water, the dark, crowded places, and even animals and insects. Once the fear becomes unconquerable and begins to affect our daily lives, it is now categorized as a phobia. Nobody likes to be faced with a phobia - me included - so it's important to recognize when it has become one and learn how to deal with it.

Coping with fear

You can try desensitizing yourself to the thing you fear by gradually increasing your exposure to it. For example, if you're afraid of big dogs, you can first try watching them from a distance. Maybe a few days later, you might feel comfortable decreasing that distance. Over time, you might be able to tolerate the presence of the dog without reacting in fright. Working up the courage to pet it would mean that you have conquered your fear. However, it isn't always this easy and having a phobia of interacting with people would probably destroy your chances for succeeding in a job interview or getting that new promotion. In that case, it is up to you to decide whether or not a professional might be of some assistance.

Facing up to your fears is very good advice. Tackling them head on is the way to prevent these fears and doubts from taking control of your life. Its important to step out of your comfort zone, squash the fears and grow as an individual.

I'm afraid you're right monitor. I like the desensitize idea but I don't know how that would work with a fear of snakes. My sister made me hold a giant boa when I visited her in Australia and we went to a wildlife reserve, the guy wrapped this giant yellow thing around me and draped it around my neck and said he had to go to lunch and started to walk off. All I can remember is that I screamed and screamed like a little girly, I don't think that was a good example of desensitization.

Thank you for dropping by donnaleemason, i can't believe someone would do that those snakes are scary beasties. I have no idea what anyone would want to get rid of their fear of snakes but if you did want to there is a good chance you can. I watched a 60 minute documentary on how this doctor helps folk overcome fear. The case study was a woman and her fear of spiders. She did get over the fear but it took several months of trying. Meanwhile if I see a snake I am gone!

The emotion of fear is quite a disdainful thing indeed. If only we had the ability to install dampeners into our brains in order to lessen or erase the feeling completely. Snakes I have no quarrel with, but you will not catch me within visible distance of a tarantula!
