What is fear and how to combat it ??
60What is fear actually??
Scientificlly, fear is the brain's response to some threat or danger. Whenever a person is put into some dangerous environment, the brain actively sends fight-or-flight signals . For instance, seeing a lion roaming openly would bring the hell out of almost everyone. It is one of the universal emotion and every one is afraid of something or the other.
There can be many types of body reactions to our fear like sweating, increased heart beats/ blood pressure, tightening of muscles, sharpened or redirected muscles and so on...
Some common fears
Terrorist attack, nuclear war, death, robbery and many other related activities are the most being afraid of. Fear has been a driving force for so many things like Bush attacking Iran due to 9/11 attack, a nuclear race, falling of governments , a political agenda and many. All the governments, police force, army are jointly dedicated to combat the fear so that citizens may live a fear free life.
Some fears have been so acute that they have been given specific terms like fear of flying is known as Aviophobia, fear of spiders Arachnephobia and fear of water Hydrophobia. There is special study and diagnosis for intense fears like these.
Other common fears are fear of public speaking, rejection, opening-up, spiders, failure, heights, the future, of being alone and so on.
Stages of fear
How does a fear develop?? Is it just that everytime we are afraid of something, we should actually be afraid of that thing? Or does it has any association with the incidents of our past? Can we avoid being afraid off? Does it actually does something good, if we are afraid of something?
Its a common lesson to the young parents not to tell the lessons creating a terror to their children. This may be associated with the fear-cycle. If someone is told repeatedly that they should be afraid of ghosts or to be more realistic, dogs, then they would definately develop fearful feelings about that thing. This is called fear conditioning. Children, who can't analize and question things, associate these things with their normal day to day activity. Whenever something new happens they may link that thing to the fearful feelings they had earlier and feel afraid. As a result, being trapped in a fear-cycle, their creativity is hampered and they are not able to grow to their full potential.
There are obviously somethings we should be afraid of. Fire, for instance, if goes uncontrolled, leads to destruction. Because of that fear, we handle fire-prone things more cautiously. Because of our fear for diseases, we keep ourselves and our surroundings neat and clean.
Is fear important?
Fear is the natural way by which an organism treats some thing that it finds a threat. Consider a group of dear in a jungle, munching the grass. Nearby there is a lion, getting ready to attack the herd. If the dear are not afraid of lion, they would be caught easily. But in reality they resist and so the lion may have to go hungry.
Similarly, before a board meeting we may feel a bit of anxiety. This fear of ours may be important because of its motivating effects. It reminds us of our weeknesses and that we have to tackle them and give our best.
How to fight fear?
" First step to fight your fear is to know it." For many of us, if we come to know what our fear is, we would be able to tackle it. We have to also identify the situations that cause fearful feelings. We can use some behavioral techniques to reduce fear.
Lets take an example of two individuals: Maria and John. Maria is a bit shy and John is very outspoken. Maria liked John's company but felt may be John being very frank, didn't like her. That was her fear of making friends that is now preventing her from once again making a friend. John also liked Maria, but felt that she may not have liked his candid nature. This situation can be prevented easily... If they understand each other and behave accordingly. Like letting each other speak or express, and not rushing to conclusions too early, seeing things from other person's perspective and toning down one's language.
Fear is the most common tool used by the leaders to gain support. They play an important role in creating and/or calming of fears. A leader must be extremely cautious about playing on the people's fear and know the consequences of their actions. People, therefore, while choosing a leader must be cautious of how the leader deals with their fears. Also, marketers, employees, terrorists and others attack our fears and profit themselves. So its better to deal with our fear beforehand, than others taking advantage of it.
Sometimes, there is the need of third parties that help solve the conflict between the two groups. These parties try to make each party comfortable and overcome their fears.
Medices are also availlable in the market to fight fear, which should be taken only under acute circumstances and under medical supervision.
Seeing the bigger picture!!!
Fear has had a wide range of consequences in the history and will definately be the cause of history in the future world.
The most common fear which is difficult to manage is the fear of losing one's identity and/or security. Individuals and groups identify themselves in certain ways (based on culture, language, race, religion, etc.) and threats to those identities arouse very real fears -- fears of extinction, fears of the future, fears of oppression, etc.
For many people, the world is changing rapidly and their lives are being altered as a result. For some religious people, this change leads to the fear that young people will abandon the Church or Mosque, that the media will become more important and influential in the lives of their children, and that they are losing control of their own future. These threats to identity result in fear.
These examples illustrate the important role that history plays in the development of fear. Memories of past injustices lead individuals to anticipate future oppression or violence with a sense of anxiety and dread.
