What Is A Fiber Optic Christmas Tree?
A Fiber Optic is a strand of glass (about the diameter of a human hair) surrounded by a reflective coating, used to transmit light over long distances.
Some optical fibers can be made from plastic, have a large core (1 mm diameter) and transmit visible light from LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) or Bulbs.
Fiber Optic Trees are made with plastic optical fibers with large core sizes.
A Fiber Optic Tree is not a traditional pre-lit Christmas tree. You won't have lights throughout the tree, instead just the tips of the branches have small fiber optic lights on them.
- Fiber Optic Trees typically range in sizes from three inches to ten feet.
- Can have multi-colored lights or clear or white lights.
- You can decorate your Fiber Optic Tree just like a standard tree.
- AC adaptor, batteries or USB.
A Fiber Optic Tree is formed by a plurality of optical fibers each having two ends.
The base of the tree have a chamber to house a light source. The light coupled into the first end of each optical fiber is transmitted to the second end.
The result is a spectacular light show of any color.
When You turn it on the tree will brighten with rays of light cascading from the branches, watch as the colors change throughout the tree and enjoy its magic.
The light source of a Fiber Optic Tree can be LEDs or Bulbs. To power it up, bulbs need an AC adaptor. LEDs can be used with AC adaptor or batteries.

- The Color: Preferably, the color of the tree should match the decorative scheme chosen.
- The Type of Lighting: One color, many different colors. Twinkle in sync, or out of sync.
Are Fiber Optic Christmas Tree Safe?
There are always safety issues when dealing with ordinary Christmas trees. Christmas lights can grow very hot. If they are cracked or damaged, they can become fire hazards.
Fiber Optic Trees are actually very safe, do not give out heat only light (there is no electricity or heat in the fiber strands).
Since they produce no heat there is no danger of catching fire like a real tree can. A Fiber Optic Tree is virtually indestructible.
May I Leave The Lights On Too Long?
For bulbs, it is not recommended to keep it lit for more than eight hours. For LEDs, you can safely keep it on for more than eight hours.
Never leave the tree plugged in while you are away from home or while you are sleeping at night, for both safety and electricity saving.

I'm not the biggest fan of the fiber optics, but each to their own. My preference is more of the realistic ones like these: http://www.treetopia.com/colored-artificial-christ
