Fiberglass Cloth

What is fiberglass?

A lightweight industrial material that is used in reinforced plastics and in making boats, pools, and cars. In this article we are not talking about traditional fiberglass that you will find insulating buildings. This is fiberglass cloth which is much different.

Many companies around the world manufacture fiberglass cloth. However, a lot of Asian fiberglass producers have recently entered the global fiberglass industry. But, fiberglass cloth can still be acquired from domestic sources in the United States still.

Fiberglass Cloth is found in a wide variety of applications these days. The base of fiberglass cloth is composed of glass "strands" which can be bought in large rolls like string or twine. This strand is generally used as the base of most fiberglass cloths and fiberglass mats. People may use the term "strand" to refer to "string" which can be somewhat accurate. A lot of fiberglass strand is made from multiple pieces of fiberglass that is wound and then sold to a end user in a roll.

Where do people use fiberglass cloth?

The marine industry uses fiberglass cloth in several different places:

Repair: fiberglass cloth is used in boat and marine repair because it is lite weight which is needed on boats.

Boat Building: Boat builders often put down a layer of fiberglass cloth before using a resin coating on top of it. When this resin hardens, the hull of a boat is made.

Small marine: some users have used fiberglass cloth with carbon fibers to make fabrics for kayaks, canoes, and other water craft that need even more strength.
