Procrastination

Procrastination is the act of putting off or delaying or deferring an action to a later time.

Typically, we procrastinate on boring or difficult tasks that really need to be done. Those are the tasks that are using some room on our mind causing us to be worried because those tasks are still not done and stress because we really don't want to make it.

What do we do when we procrastinate?

Usually, we don't do anything productive while procrastinating because that would be a case of prioritize where we give a higher priority to another productive and maybe not so important tasks over our boring ones. What happens more frequently is people start doing nothing instead of what they need to do.

We say we are tired or stressed and just need to relax a little bit in the couch, but instead of relaxing, we will be thinking on what we should be doing and we're not. That will crave a guilty feeling on the back of our minds leaving us more stressed than before. If you really feel tired or stressed and you need to relax, don't go to a relaxed minutes on the couch or watch TV or anything like that. Go out for a walk, a run or to do some exercise. Spend your energies with some physical exercise, keeping your mind focused on the goal of pushing you forward on your walk, run or exercise. This will bring your stress levels to a lower level.

But I'm hungry and that TV show I like is starting

Other usual techniques people use to trick themselves and delay the work that needs to be done is to remember fake things they really need to do at that time. Feeling hungry is the most common of that. You always feel hungry or thirsty or sleepy in need of a coffee when a boring task is going on. This technique not only makes us delay our work that needs to be done, but also makes us eat more than we need and eat less healthier things since in those snacks we usually eat fatty, salty or high level sugar food, drink refrigerants with tons of sugar and calories and drink much more coffee than we should.

If you really feel thirsty, avoid coffee and sodas. Go for water, milk or natural fruit juices. Keep a bottle of water with you while you're working, this will avoid the need to stop the work to kill your thirsty. To combat the hunger, opt for pieces of fruit. Apples, oranges, bananas, grapes. All fruits make excelent snacks providing you energy and refreshment at the same time besides all the vitamins and minerals we need.

If possible, establish milestones for your task and plan the snacks for the milestones. Make them like a bonus for the complete work. Give yourself the challenge, when I complete x, I can have a snack or a coffee or anything else. This way, you will focus on finishing that partial task to get the carrot. It's incredible how this works. You can also give yourself other kind of rewards, such as to watch your favorite tv show or play a little bit of your game. But you really need to enforce that you folloe the rules you set yourself. Don't cheat on you.
