While in the United States, dog fighting is a crime, there are parts of the world, especially in Japan, that this sport is a legal and a tradition. Most people think of dog fighting as a blood sport and in some counties, particularly in Central and South America, it can be deadly for the dogs.

I do not approve of dog fighting but when deciding on a breed of dog that is a great protector and a great guard dog, checking out how well of a fighter that breed is can be a deciding factor. Nobody wants a Chihuahua to guard their property and how this decision can be made is how well the dog has performed in dog fighting competition.

While it is illegal to fight dogs in the United States, it is not illegal to own breeds that are designated as fight dogs. The major exception to this is areas that have banned Pit Bulls because of their dangerous demeanor.

Dog fighting has been a major part of the history of dog breeds and became quite popular in England in the 19th century when laws were passed to stop bull and bear fighting. Fight promoters went underground, literally, and began using rats and small animals to fight. The Pit Bull came about because of this desire to have smaller animals for fighting.

In Japan, breeds like the Akita Inu and Tosa Inu were bred to participate in the ceremonial dog fights. In fact, dog fighting is still legal in Japan and there are lots of regulations designed to protect the animal.

The dogs on this list have been organized by world opinion on the best breeds for fighting. This list is for informational purposes to help those trying to decide on guard dogs and not for the use of these great animals for fighting.

Caucasian Ovtcharka

The fighting strains of the Caucasian Ovcharka can contain blood of some European breeds, from mastiffs to American Pit Bull Terriers and Bandogs, but these crosses are a minority in the breed. These dogs were used for centuries to protect properties, guard livestock, kill wolves, hunt bears and the green for many other duties.

Cane Corso

The Cane Corso's history is shrouded in mystery and differing opinions. It is generally agreed that the Cane Corso is a farm dog which has been used for stock control, property, guard dogs and big game hunting throughout its Italian history.

Fila Brasileiro

The Fila Brasileiro is an exceptional guard dog, related to the Mastiff, and is great cattle herder. It does not hide its dislike of strangers, but these dogs are not disqualified from the show ring for showing aggression to the judges.

Pakistani Mastiff

The Pakistani Mastiffs are victims of dog fighting but most of these rare dogs are used as guard dogs in Pakistan and India. It is because of their enormous size and strength that a few find themselves in the hands of people who choose to use them for dog fighting which is still illegal in Pakistan and its neighboring countries.

Presa Canario

Presa Canario was created during the 18th century for the purpose of being a guard dog, for the holding and driving of livestock, and exterminating wild or stray dogs. This dog breed was also used for dog fighting, a tradition the English settlers transplanted along with their Mastiff and Bulldog breeds. Canary Islanders consider these fights "honor fights" and not the sole purpose of the animal.

Dogo Argentino

The Dogo Argentino was bred specifically to avoid the dog aggression problems inherent in the Cordoba Fighting Dog when applied to hunting, specifically its lack of ability to hunt in a pack. The creators of the breed took great care to prevent this undesirable trait from manifesting in the Dogo Argentino, as the breed was always intended to be a pack hunter.

American Bandogge

While these dogs weren't bred to be fighting dogs, they do share hostile traits with their crossbreeds, at least when it comes to other dogs, meaning that they make a poor selection for people who've never owned a dog, or aren't familiar with dogs that don't socialize well with others. Still, some do use these dogs for fighting.

English Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Staffordshire Bull Terrier had originally been bred for bull baiting. The fact that it can scrap with bulls shows that it's pretty strong breed of dog for fighting.

American Pit Bull Terrier

There is much debate as to where the APTB belongs on this list. To some, there is no better a fighting dog, but to those who fight dogs legally, this breed is farther down on their list. This dog is most popular for dog fighting in the United States where it is highly illegal.

English Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Staffordshire Bull Terrier had originally been bred for bull baiting. The fact that it can scrap with bulls shows that it's pretty strong breed of dog for fighting.

Tosa Inu

The Tosa Inu is a massive, regal dog, standing well over 30 inches at the shoulders and weighing up to 150 pounds. This is an animal of legendary courage, intelligence and amazing presence. It has been described as the Sumo Wrestler of the Canine World and is considered a National Treasure in Japan. The sight of a Tosa Inu arrayed in full ceremonial fighting regalia and traditionally brought into the fighting arena by two handlers, makes an impressive and unforgettable impact.

Fighting dogs make terrible guard dogs. Basic dog psychology tells us that human aggression (HA) and dog aggression (DA) are completely different thought processes in dogs. Fighting dogs are supposed to be DA, while guard dogs are supposed to be HA. If you get an American Pit Bull Terrier to be a guard dog, you are going to be disappointed. Try a Rottweiler or a German Shepherd Dog.

After thinking about it, I realized that I didn't entirely clarify my point in my previous comment.

Fighting dogs are bred specifically NOT to be human aggressive and TO be dog aggressive. Obviously they want them to fight other dogs, but the second a human steps in the ring, that dog had damn well better not bite his owner's hand!

This is not to say that dogs can't be HA and DA. Many are. But genetically speaking, fighting dogs will be the opposite of human aggressive.

True but many fighting dogs also appear on guard dog lists and the DA can be trained out of them. I would much rather have a Tosa Inu guard my property than a Yorkshire terrier not matter how HA you make the critter.

Yes, but as Helena stated these dogs are bred for dog aggression NOT and NEVER bred for human aggression. People who breed game and fighting dogs typically have to have real guard dogs to protect those because strangers can easily come steal the game or fighting dogs because they are people friendly.

Now days though people use these dogs for all sorts of aggression and have ruined them. They can be people aggressive but that's not what they were bred for initially, and they are terrible guard dogs in general.

Did you know that when dog fighting was at its height off the British Isle, they did not fight with specific breeds nor did they seek a certain breeds to fight and breed as fighting dogs. They bred and fought whatever dog showed any sign of dog aggression and any dog that they thought would be successful in a dog fight. Overtime certain breeds did become sought after to fight, but not in the begining and height of the blood sport.

Sharyn Hutchens  says:

I agree with Helena. Fighting dogs are specifically bred for ease of handling. These dogs are stitched up on site without anesthesia. The good ones never, ever bite a human, regardless of the pain. Obviously a large dog is better than a small dog for protection, but choosing an extremely powerful fighting dog is not a smart move for the average dog owner. These dogs are very dangerous to other pets and neighborhood animals. They are prey-driven and not easy to handle, simply because of their tremendous strength. Someone wanting a protection dog should go with a breed intended for protection, not fighting. A Dobe is a much better choice.

Anyone who even expresses a vague interest in owning or fighting dogs should be thrown in a pit of starving lions. Disgusting people - and it doesnt make you a 'hard man' just a sick weakling. Get a life.

There is no such thing as a fighting dog breed!

Actually they are called Humans! The animals are trained that way by the human race.

People who train and care for any type of animal fighting should be erased from the face of this earth..they do not deserve to exist! Actually I could say a whole lot more and could go on forever but it is a waste just like those people!! If I was able to legally dispose of any human who partakes in this horrific act..I would personally!

I owned and bred pitbulls years ago and they are one of the best breeds..when cared for properly!! The pitbull is just one breed that has been given a bad name..so please understand this breed along with many others as well should not be feared..THEY SHOULD BE LOVED!

An animal is only a reflection of the one who cares for it!

I have rescued so many animals and it is a shame of how people treat animals today.

There are so many organizations that fight to save animals around the world..PLEASE HELP any one of these (OR MORE) organizations stop this cruel act and other acts as well!

Be a real human - Donate, spread the word and make a difference!!!

Much luv to those who do!!

To KWolf. I work in a vet's office. We treat a lot of Pit Bulls. I know from experience that they are the sweetest breeds there is, but they are most misunderstood. Like my boss says, he's been bitten by more Chihuahuas than Pits. It breaks my heart to see how these lovely dogs are treated. And I certainly agree that people who fight dogs should be eradicated.

I wrote a blog on my Arfie about a sweet baby pit bull named Domino who was horribly abused but rescued. He's one of the lucky ones. If there were any justice in the world these angels would all get the love and respect they deserve.

I think at one time Pit Bulls were high on the list because they were bred for that kind of thing. Now they're bred for giant heads and look absolutely nothing like the fighting Pit Bulls of the past. They're slow and fat and have more in common with the Bulldog than the terrier.

I have a Jack Russell, my brother-in-law has a Chihuahua, and my dad has Pit Bulls. Now i am more afraid of my BIL Chihuahua than i am a pit. My dads dogs are sweet. His male is male dog aggressive but not human aggressive. He just doesn't like other guys around his girls. He loves anything that is a baby and knows better than to touch it. Now, my BIL Chihuahua will attack any male dog he sees or any human who has male dog smell on them. He chases dogs larger than him out of my yard when he's here visiting. I would have a Chihuahua for a guard dog before anything else. My dog is just too nice. she likes everybody unless they are mean to the kids. I'm more afraid of small than large. You can see large coming but rarely ever small until they are on top of you. I think dog fighting is the most hurtful sport around. Those animals have no say in what there owner does with them and it is just wrong. The owner should be hung in the middle of the road by a rope. or made to fight till the death with another dog fighter and stitched up on the spot with no pain killers. then maybe they would know how it feels for these poor animals.

I think those who get kicks out of dog fighting need to get a life. This is so unfair to these animals and it is also cruel. They have no choice but to do what is asked of them.

A little compassion for these animals could go a long way.People need to stop and think about what they are doing. Dog fighting should be banned everywhere!

Well I do agree with the facts that have been stated about there being a difference between a guard dog and fighting dog. But I don't agree entirely with the purpose of the article in question. I'm highly against dog fighting in general. Its animal abuse no matter what country you are from. I've seen both sides of the spectrum. I've seen dogs first hand after being trained to be killers, and yes, it does NOT matter if you are animal or human. They are bred and trained to kill. If you show them any type of dominant behavior they will most definitely try to test you.

Its taking advantage of animal nature. I live in NY and sadly the majority of fighting dogs here are Pit Bulls. I've tried to save a couple that were already in stages of training, but unfortunately I had no choice but to put them down. It was suggested by all the humane societies in Orange County that viewed them and also by the NY ASPCA. But, I've also raised a couple from puppy- hood and proud to say they are both 8 yrs of age and both healthy and happy dogs. Love children and all people. One male, named Damian featured in a photo in a hub I wrote. And the other, a female named Dakota, whom actually resides with me. Its a disgusting way to treat animals. If I knew anyone that I knew for certain they were fighting any animal, regardless of family or friend, I would turn them in to authorities in the blink of an eye.

Alphamale  says:

As soon as a dog bred for fighting becomes human aggressive, it signs it own death warrant which is why fighting bred dogs make poor guard dogs. However, any dog ( fighting bred or not ) will protect it's owners property simply because firstly, being territorial gives every canine a protective instinct and secondly, dogs inherently know when it's master/owner/pack is threatened. Also, only a very small percentage of any breed bred to fight actually excell at it just as not every herding dog excells at herding!

I had two "Pit Bull" mixed breeds. One was half lab and other one was Pit and something else, not sure what.

Both dogs were fine (at first) in our home, but that was after they ate the leather furniture and chewed up all of my shoes. I had to put my shoes on top of the TV when we left them alone.

It wasn't until the older of the two grabbed our neighbor dog under the fence line and ripped some of the flesh from his leg, that we decided, no more PIT BULLS at our house!

You people who reject dog fighting should understand that humans fight, people have wars, ants fight, and everything in the world, dies.

I'm all for being kind to animals, but desiring a fighting dog, so u don't have to pick your dog up if some stray pitbull, etc, comes running down the street is a definite fact to consider for some.

i don't advocate killing people with guns, but I'd rather have one for protection, one that i was comfortable with and could get the job done.

Let PETA starves on grains and berries. But, i like a bit of meat, so I don't mind the kill. Let's be human, but a dog has no soul, he is not human, and ya'll kill and advocate the killing of babies in the womb. But, if someone smashes a fly, you weep like its the end of the world.

This is supposed to be a list in order of best fighting dogs. Why you have an English Staff higher up than a pit bull terrier is beyond me. No disrespect meant as I once owned a staff but (i also have friends in Birminham who own pits) but you cannot in any way compare a staff to a pit bull. Few dogs could can take a proper pit down in a fight. Its v v crafty fighting bigger dogs it will genarally hang onto the snout of animals that are larger than it...

Don't compare Guard Dog with Fighting Dog - that is way off and wrong on many levels.

When a dog is professionally trained as a guard dog or security dog they are not trained to fight or kill , they are trained to warn and to protect.

Ask yourself what your really looking for, a dog to PROTECT and GUARD ?

or a Dog to fight ?

and remember if it is trained to fight , will it be able to pick and choose who it fights or will all things living and breathing become its victims ? How on earth will that dog determine which/who it must fight and who will it leave alone?

I had for many years a beautiful Rottweiler who was professionally trained as a Guard dog and that he was . He also became extremely close to my special needs kids and was extremely protective of them as he had been trained .

Going to piss a lot of people off with my response here. It is not dog fighting that is cruel, it's what the people like Michael Vic do to them to prepare them for fighting that is cruel. Dog fighting "in Japan for instance" is legal and there are many rules in play to protect the dog's. If you enjoy watching two people fight in the ring like the UFC "Ultimate fighting championship's" you are sick. Well not really, you just enjoy the sport. What is the difference between that and a dog fight that has "rules" to protect the dog? If you are saying dog fighting is sick, and the UFC is ok than you need your brain examined.
