Filing Appeals
49Disputes with the IRS are an inconvenience.
- Results of tax audits

- Accrued interest
- Placement of tax lien
- Placement of tax levy
- Seizures of Assets
- Offer in Compromise rejections
An Internal Revenue Service letter will let you know that you can opt to appeal the decision if any of the above situations applies to you. Don't sign the agreement form you received if you disagree with the Internal Revenue Service ruling and have just reason for an appeal. You can then demand a hearing for an appeal.
Take a close look. You might have gotten a real bill because you owe the IRS money. In this situation, there is no likelihood of an appeal. An appeals hearing isn't a possibility if you can't afford to pay what you owe to the bureau.
Be prepared to give justifications why you don't agree with the bureau's ruling. You'll need to be able to back up your reasons with documentation.Scan the notice to know how to make your request for an appeal, where to mail the request, the deadline for receipt of the request, and what information should be included with the request.
It should be noted that sending a request for appeal doesn't keep the interest and penalties from accruing on your bill.
Appeals hearings can be casual, done by correspondence, telephone, or in person. You will be glad to hear that most disagreements with the IRS can be settled in appeals.

The timeframe for your appeal is based on the kind of case you are appealing, including the length of time it takes for the Internal Revenue Service to study the file. Typically, an appeals hearing takes place within ninety days after you have sent your request. When you haven't gotten word from the IRS within ninety days, touch base with the Internal Revenue Service office where you sent your appeal to and they should be able to confirm when your appeal was forwarded. That will determine the start of the 90-day waiting period for the hearing.
Have patience as it might take as long as a year to solve your case. A more accurate timeframe can be given by your appeals officer.
