Finding the Right Flash Drive

Evaluating your portable media needs
As the popularity and practicality of using a flash drive increases, more and more people are investing in the portable technology. Everyone from students to artists are using flash drives as a means to transfer data from computer-to-computer. You can find a flash drive in any color, shape and size, and as the technology used evolves, flash drives will begin to get even smaller and larger in storage size.
What are you using it for?
Ask yourself what you will be using a flash drive for. If you are on the go frequently, moving between computers and generally never quite know when you are going to have the chance to finish something, a flash drive might be right up your alley. If you are using it often, chances are you will run into a computer that does not have USB port to connect it to; if this is the case, you might also want to invest in a media card reader, too. This is a relatively cheap investment but necessary one if you are moving around to use it a lot.
The next question to ask yourself is how much information do you want to be able to store. Flash drives range from 24 MB to 50+ GB in size. As storage space increases, so does the price range. Most people find that one GB to five GB is the right size range. If you need something bigger, the sizes are out there through online retailers and directly from the companies making flash drives. It is important to narrow down the size range you are looking for in order to determine which ones fit in your price range.

Will you be using it often?
If you will be using your flash drive often, investing in a case or lanyard might be the best way to travel. Of course, you can carry the unit in your wallet, purse or pocket, but it might make you feel more secure to have something sturdy to keep it in. The more you use the unit, the more impact and more likely it is that you might damage it. Many retailers offer protection and replacement plans on small electronics, and if you are using it often, it might well be worth the investment.
