What type of service do you need?

When it comes to cable providers, there are different options for everyone looking to get cable television in their apartment or home. Everything from basic cable to the more advanced high-definition television can be the right fit for anyone if you are willing to pay the price for it.

First, you want to decide what your price range is and what the maximum amount is you would be willing to spend on cable. Cable companies offer different packages depending on the type of service you want. You can get the bare minimum for under $20 in some places whereas by spending upwards of $100 you can get premium channels, high-definition channels and on-demand features. By spending even more money, you can rent equipment such as DVR boxes and other cable boxes to expand the viewing experience in your home.

Next, what type of programming are you looking for? The more expensive plans will have more channels. Basic cable can have anywhere from 20 - 40 channels, expanded cable can have upwards of 40+ channels.

Finally, are you looking to add other services with your cable program? Services such as additional cable boxes, Internet services and even phone service can cost more, but they can also grant you additional discounts from your provider.

What's out there?

Three of the biggest cable providers in direct competition at the moment is Comcast, Cox and DirecTV. Comcast and Cox are coaxial cable providers whereas DirecTV is provided via satellite. Depending on where you live in the country, you may also have competition from local providers looking to take business away from the bigger players.

Comcast provides digital cable through the use of underground cables in most areas. They have more than 25+ million subscribers, and they are considered the largest provider in the nation. They offer a variety of packages as well as on demand programming from premium channels and television stations. Comcast offers what they call a "triple play bundle" where if you purchase a plan from each of their services, you will gain additional discounts and save more money, too.

Cox is the third largest provider and is considered among the best in customer service and giving the little guy a break. Currently, Cox has more than 7+ million customers and is regarded by the industry as the best cable provider in the country. It prides itself on educating customers on cable service as well as new technology to enhance their viewing experience. Digital cable through Cox has more than 200+ channels as well as a variety of local programming that varies region-to-region.

DirecTV is the satellite television leader. As long as your dish faces a DirecTV center, you can get programming to the best of your signal. However, if you cannot get a satellite dish to face the right direction, it is not possible to get service from the company without going to great lengths. At the moment, DirecTV has more than 17+ million customers and offer more sports programming than any other provider out there. They offer premium HDTV packages as well hosting the most wide-ranging HD programming in the country. Everything from their NFL Sunday Ticket to their Showtime Unlimited package is possible for every subscriber.

There are many different providers out there that might work for you. With a little bit of research and effort, you can find the right one for you.
