These are some helpful fitness terms.

Here are some basic terms that relate to fitness. More terms will be added shortly. This is a good way to get familar with health and fitness or prepare to take the personal trainer test or for general knowledge.

A set- A group of repetitions of an exercise done consecutively until a given number is reached.

Repetition- An individual completed exercise movement.

Slow twitch fibers- Muscle fiber type that contracts slowly and is used most in moderate-intensity. endurance exercises, such as running for distance.

Fast twitch fibers- Muscle fiber type that contracts quickly and is used most in intensive, short duration exercises, such as sprints or weightlifting.

Diet- The food a person eats. May or may not be a selection of foods to accomplish a particular health or fitness objective.

Conditioning- Long-term physical training.

Cardiovascular- Pertaining to the heart and blood vessels.

Torque- Moment of force; The turning or twisting effect of force.

Compound set- Alternating two exercises for one body part with little rest between sets.

Staggered sets- Performing ten sets of forearm, abs or calf work in between sets for say chest or legs.

Monster set- Performing 4-6 exercises for one muscle group with little rest.

Tri set- Performing three exercises for one muscle group with little rest.

Super-set- Alternating opposing muscle group exercises with little rest between sets.

Max- Maximum effort for one repetition of a weight training exercise.
