I compiled this great list of football hooligan films after creating a hub called 'The 5 Most Shocking Football Hooligan Videos' which is actually a showcase of 5 real life YouTube videos. I realised that some people may find that article whilst looking for hooligan films, so here it is if you are one of those very people. You may also be interested in books by genuine football hooligans, if so you need my hub 'The Very Best Football Hooligan Books'.

These are not the only great Football Hooligan films out there, particularly as an Englishman, but these were the only ones that I could find available to the American consumer on Amazon.com. I suspect that a British football fan may know one or two others, The Firm being an obvious old one. I guess that this hub should probably be called 'Great Soccer Hooligan Films', anyway, enough of my inane rambling; on with the show.....

Green Street (2005)

Green Street was released in the UK in 2005 to great acclaim, and was enjoyed by testosterone pumped males in countries around the globe. The star of this film is Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood who plays an American journalism student named Matt who is expelled from Harvard and moves to London to live with his sister. He gets close to his sisters brother-in-law, who happens to be the head of West Ham's football firm 'The Green Street Elite', he gets caught up in their life of violence with tragic consequences. A great film for those looking to gain an insight into the underground British soccer culture, although perhaps lacking any real depth or intelligent storyline, as things stand though..... it at least equals all of the other hooligan films out there. 4/5

The Football Factory (2004)

If I had one criticism of Green Street, it is that it glorifies the violence a little too much, almost trying to sell some sort of 'romance' associated with pissed up men thinking thinking that they are gods. The anecdote for the pure adrenaline of Green Street is The Football Factory, which is based on the bestselling novel by John King. Don't get me wrong the violence is just as strong, if not even more extreme, but the storyline has a much deeper emotional message and a further insight into English male culture. The story follows Tommy, a twenty-something male who lives for his beer and drug fuelled weekends of casual sex, football, and fighting. Tommy eventually gets himself into a fight with a rival that starts a full blown war, and a series of events make him question his lifestyle. The Football Factory is shot in a documentary style, with handheld shots, and makes for a great watch. 4/5

Green Street 2 (2009)

The sequel to Green Street didn't receive the best reviews, at least from the ones that I managed to catch, and I will be honest - It is the biggest load of wank I have seen for a long time, without a doubt the worst football hooligan film that I have ever had the displeasure of watching. The film loses its only draw for the mainstream, and that is the decision of Elijah Wood not to appear (he obviously read the completely lacklustre script)/ I would suggest that if you really want to waste your hard earned cash then it is essential to watch the first film before buying this sequel, as this episode sees the top dogs of the Green Street Elite end up in prison after a serious encounter with their arch-rivals Millwall. On the inside their life is made hell by prison guards and rival firms, leaving them with no option to "stand their ground and fight", to state the films flagship quote. My most significant criticism is that the film takes a well trodden - and thus very boring - path, with it ending in rivalries being fought on a football pitch, I can name at least 5 films with those same typical and predictable endings. The acting is terrible, it looks low budget, basically it is crap - I couldn't even find enough decent quotes to make a hub on 'Green Street 2 Best Quotes', there is probably one memorable quote in the entire script. For the lack of imagination in the storyline, and shit acting, I give this 1.5/5
