As with any other sport, practice makes perfect when it comes to football, especially where your quarterback is concerned. Since the quarterback is in the uniquely advantageous position of being the one on the field who calls the plays, he must be the most familiar with them. However, a quarterback’s role on the team is not completely a strategic one—he also does the majority of the team’s throwing and passing. To get your quarterback in his best throwing shape possible, have him run these football training drills.
After the initial stretch and running section of the practice is finished, each quarterback on your team begins on his series of football training drills by throwing 10 or 15 balls in a variety of positions to work on a better total body throw as opposed to relying on arm strength alone. Have your players pair off and pass to each other from each position. For each position, have your players work on rotating their non-throwing shoulder up and away, since the goal of these football training drills is not just to warm up the throwing arm but also to open up the shoulders and utilize the whole body in the throw.
Position 1- Sitting 10 yards apart with their legs straight and facing each other
Position 2- Kneeling 15 yards apart, throwing overhead.
Position 3- Standing with the right knee up and pointed at the other player.
Position 4- Standing with the left knee up and pointed at the other player.
Position 5- Standing 20 yards apart, feet shoulder width apart and pointing at the other
player.
Position 6- Standing with feet shoulder width apart and toes pointing at a 90 degree angle
away from the other player.
Position 7- Standing with feet shoulder width apart and toes pointing at a 90 degree angle
in the opposite direction as before towards the other player.
Positions 8,9 and 10 are the same as 5,6, and 7 but at a distance of 40 yards instead of 20.
After those football training drills are completed, they are followed by a series of throwing drills aimed at improving the accuracy of one’s throws. Again have your quarterbacks pair up and stand 15 yards apart. One player runs backwards while the other runs at him, throwing to each other while running for four lengths of the field. Each time they drop the ball or a throw is missed, have them start over and before long your quarterbacks will be throwing amazingly accurate passes, even on the run.
The final series of quarterback football training drills are to be done in a gymnasium. Have your quarterbacks stand 20 yards from the wall and throw the ball, aiming for the spot where the wall meets the ceiling. This drill develops a strong, deep throw, and over time the distance from the wall is increased as your quarterback improves his accuracy and quick release skills. After about 6 weeks, he should be able to shoot off 25 balls in approximately 25-30 seconds.
