The modern shower should be more of an experience in luxury than a simple act of day to day necessity.  When you daydream during your morning washing you should nearly forget where you are, and mistake yourself for being in a high class day spa.  A bathtub is a place for children to bathe, and really has no place in an adult's bathroom.  This is why the current trend for remodeling bathrooms will nearly always include a walk in shower.  Walk in shower enclosures are incredibly popular right now, especially those with frameless shower doors.

Instead of being confined to a small area of a bathtub, and trapped behind a dirty shower curtain, we can now free up a much larger area and can install additional shower accessories.  Not only will this change make you look forward to waking up each morning (or at least make waking up more bearable) it will also help improve the value of your home.  When your bathroom looks like a five star hotel instead of a pay by the hour motel, you will be able to ask for significantly more money when you decide to sell your home.

What is a Frameless Shower Door?

This is simply a shower door made completely from glass (or other glass like material). Instead of being mounted through cheap metal frames, the hinges of these doors go directly through the glass. It is now even possible to purchase a frameless glass shower door that slides open, instead of opening using hinges. They are almost exclusively designed for the walk in variety, but it is possible to have one custom made for those that also include a bathtub.

The frameless glass shower door brings a minimalist elegance to your entire bathroom. They also allow you to be much more creative with the design and style inside of the shower. When covered by a curtain or another type of enclosure, the true beauty of its design would never be seen. When you go frameless the door is nearly invisible, allowing you to show off a great looking stained concrete floors or beautiful tiles. This allows anyone who enters to see how stylish your shower really is. The invisible look of the door also gives the feeling of openness, and makes the room seem much bigger than it actually is. This style shower door can really fit in with any type of bathroom.

Installing Frameless Shower Doors

This is a project that one can do themselves, but it is a more advanced job then some other do it yourself projects.  The glass of the frameless shower door can be quite heavy and are a bit more difficult to install than your typical framed version.

One of the most important aspect of this job is that you get all the measurements correct.  Take all the measurements and create a drawing that is from the top view perspective, fill in all measurements and make sure they are as accurate as possible. You should also create a drawing for side view, noting any obstructions the door might encounter.  Use a level to ensure that the walls are plumb, if they are not the glass panel will need to be wider or narrower in areas to compensate.

Take all these specifications to your local showroom or online dealer, and purchase a frameless shower door that you like best.  Depending on the manufacturer there will be some differences in the rest of the installation process, but I have included a few videos that should help you get a general picture of it how works.
