My first dog Kym, a Rottweiler bitch was a nightmare to own. A beautiful animal but ruined by me through ignorance. Taking her for a walk was no fun at all. She was aggressive with other dogs, her recall was at best poor and I had to keep her on the lead most of the time. She was possessive over her food and toys and would growl at you if you went near her when eating. She would bark all the time and was driving our neighbours nuts. My partner was terrified of her! All in all she was no fun to own at all.

This state of affairs continued until I at last got professional help in the form of an experienced dog trainer. He taught me what I needed to know. The fact of the matter was their was nothing wrong with my dog! The problem was me. Through ignorance I had allowed my dog to take control of my life.

The dog trainer spent most of his time training me! Once I had learned some simple rules and applied them consistently things began to change. Over a period of about 6 months the balance of power shifted and I regained control of my own dog.

If I had known these simple rules when my dog was a puppy I would have saved myself much pain and frustration.

What it takes to own a dog

I'll let you in on the secret to what it takes to have a dog that is a well behaved. A dog that isn't well behaved can become a nightmare to own. Then through no fault of their own they are placed into rescue as being unmanagable. How unfair. Lets face it there are no bad dogs only bad owners.

The one thing you can't buy from anyone is the will to spend TIME with your dog. Nothing else will do.

  • TIME to look for the breed that is ideal for you
  • TIME to talk to a breeder
  • TIME to go see your puppies parents
  • TIME to get your home ready
  • TIME to learn about your breed
  • TIME to buy / borrow books about your dog
  • TIME to train your dog
  • TIME to socialization your dog
  • TIME to take him to dog training classes
  • TIME to take him for walks
  • TIME to have fun with him
  • TIME to work him
  • TIME to....

A dog will not train himself! YOU DO!

I receive Email from people daily who have problems with their dogs:

"Laura my puppy is aggressive"

"Laura my dog jumps up at me"

"Laura my dog goes toilet anywhere he pleases"

"Laura my dog runs away"... All the problems these owners have can be easily sorted by the application of TIME.

If you would like to avoid a lot of the mistakes I made when I first started training dogs please visit my Dog Training Tales website.

All the best,

Laura
