If you are a PC user and have internet connection, which most likely you are, then you will be needing some sort of virus protection. Now the question is whether you are willing to shell out the extra buck for some top notch software or would rather do some research to find the best free anti-virus software out there. There are numerous companies out there who put out a decent product. However only a few can compete with more expensive software.

1) Anti-Vir Personal Edition Classic. (www.free-av.com)

Out of the free anti-virus software anti-vir comes out on top. However, when compared to paid software it is pretty average. Anti-Vir has a clean user interface and was able to detect about 90 percent of the common virus. It does lack the ability to detect adaware/spyware compared to the paid programs. Overall its number one on my top 3 list of free anti-virus software. It is easy to use, quick, and efficient.

2) Alwil Software Avast Home Edition 4.6 (www.avast.com)

Avast's new addition to the anti-virus freeware has a very good-looking user interface. When scanning for viruses it is noticeably quite a bit slower. Unfortunately the performance just isn't up to par to the appearance.

3) Grisoft AVG Free Edition 7.1 (free.grisoft.com)

Have you tried AVAST? I'm a convert - it's awesome and you don't even know it's running.
