There are many companies offering free websites and I have tried quite a few of them. I am a computer novice so I did not want anything too complicated. I found that although all of the sites were advertised as no knowledge required, with many of them it took many hours to become familiare with the way they functioned and a knowledge of HTML was required to make the site look reasonably professional.

Many of the sites although free were very limited in the functions you could actually use and the space available, unless you upgraded to a paid site plan, was very limited. I have given details of some of the sites below.

www.350.com

Have a wide range of fairly professional looking sites but flexibility was limited and very basic features were only available if you upgraded. The sites did not have many automated features and I found this time consuming and difficult to work on.

A more easy to operate site with some useful features but the advertising was pop up and flashing which I found to be intrusive.

www.spanglefish.com

I have found this to be the best overall site. After you register you are supplied with a complete site with header which you can work on straight away. You can change the header to your own design at any time you wish by uploading your own header.

The site has many features for uploading graphics and you can select an easily workable shopping cart if you want to sell from your site.

Overall I have found this to be the best site. Its relatively easy to work on even if you have no computer knowledge. Spanglefish is very popular with many local councils and clubs and if you require help in making your site more professional, there are experienced Spanglefish programmers you can contact to design your site or help improve the site you have started. Just contact them through the discussion pages section.

Spanglefish is also very cheap to upgrade to a site with your own domain name and no advertising. So I must say they are the best overall site that I have found for the beginner who wants to produce a website quickly and easily and may want to go on to a more professional site later.
