My Friend in Black: A Poem
57You wore the scent of midnight on your skin
And gazed upon the world with tearless eyes.
You laughed at all the hearts that cried for you,
But time has helped me see through your disguise.
These things you did, you did to keep control,
To always be the right and worshipped one,
And all the while to push us all away,
To have a bit of self-indulgent fun.
But deep inside you, waiting to be filled
Is still that hole, ripped open in your youth,
The weakness you have fought to keep concealed.
So clearly now I see your awful truth.
I wonder now if you will never know
The truth about the world and of yourself.
As we move on to love and happiness,
Will you be left alone upon the shelf?
