I think the reason for its popularity is the fact that all the characters are so delightfully human, they go through ups and downs of life, they get embarassed, or rather embarass themselves, they all have weaknesses and strengths, they are weird, and have mood swings.

You can identify with most of the things they are.

Joey, with the blank and funny look on his face, and his How U doing line, as well as, the fact that he doesn't understand stuff easily. It takes longer for him to get a joke.

Monica, with all her controlling and cleaning freakiness, and her cooking as well. Especially when she's in love with Richard, and has to break up with him, because of her priorities. Also the fact that she tries so hard to please, and to be perfect, as she never was given proper attention by her parents.

Rachel, with her easygoing nature, and her feelings for Ross, and how she copes with his marriage, and her mood swings during her pregnancy.

Ross, or should I say Dr. Ross, the intelligent and sweet guy. He makes some stupid mistakes, but loves Rachel to distraction, and tries so hard to please her.
