The Classic Sugar Cookie

Here is one of my favorite recipes for any holiday: the classic sugar cookie. Baked plain, with additions or decorated after baking, this cookie is simple yet extremely versatile. You can make this type of cookie for any occasion, just by varying the decoration to match the season.

Ingredients:

  • 3 C sifted all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 C white sugar

  • 1 C butter

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

  • 3 Tbsp cream

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.

2. Sift together the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt into a large bowl.

3. Cut the butter into the dry ingredients and blend until mixture is crumbly. Gently stir in lightly beaten egg, vanilla and cream. Mix well.

4. Flour a work surface and roll out the dough to a 1/8" thickness. Cut your cookies shaped cutters, almost any designs are good. Place on ungreased baking sheet and sprinkle lightly with white or colored sugar.

5. Bake cookies for 6 - 8 minutes, or until lightly brown on the top and edges.

  • These cookies freeze well. Seal into tight containers or wrapping and freeze for up to a month.

  • Instead of sprinkling sugar, frost cookies with an opaque or tinted powdered sugar glaze.
