English is without a doubt the lingua franca of the world. You can go to any country in the world that speaks an entirely different language and you are sure to find more than a handful of people who can speak English. It is definitely a unifying language, and for some countries, it could even be a key to economic progress, particularly in countries that offer business process outsourcing services.

The prevalence of English makes it necessary to develop at least a working knowledge of it. Today, English as a second language is being taught all over the world, with the students being people who are simply interested in becoming more fluent in English to those who are migrating to an English-speaking country.

If learning English has come a little later in an individual's life, he or she may need some extra aids to make his or her study more interesting.

About ESL Lessons

English as a second language (ESL) lessons usually include studying grammar, vocabulary, conversational English, and reading comprehension, among others. Such classes are taught in schools or language learning centers, with some of the latter focusing exclusively on ESL. These lessons will also provide students with the opportunity to practice their English and learn from practical exercises and activities. ESL teachers generally make use of ESL materials such as flash cards, worksheets, pictures, games, and worksheets.

Other Ways to Teach ESL

The classroom experience, wherein a student learning ESL will get plenty of exercise from lessons and practice conversations with students, is definitely helpful in teaching English as a second language. But you might want to explore other methods that will familiarize a student with the English language.

Apart from learning aids like books and flash cards, students may find studying more interesting with a little more media integration. You can have them watch TV shows or movies in English to give them a better idea about colloquial English. Students can also be taken out on quick field trips--even just to the mall or to a park--and let them see how English is being used everywhere.
