67Here is an idea that is fun for kids'; grow some edible foods in your flower beds. You don't have to have a large area for plants like tomatoes, bell pepper, or even cabbage.
This is also a fun way to introduce children on how things grow. When my children were young, and because it was just a fun thing to do, I would plant a couple of tomatoes plants, bell pepper plants and cabbage in my flower bed. They always liked going out there and picking the tomato plants, or bell pepper. The cabbage was my task.
Other edible plants that you can grow in a flower bed, are strawberries. Strawberry plants are great to grown along a fence line, or the house. Strawberries are famous for having leaders that will grow, creating new ones. Mowing as close to the flower bed of your strawberries can prevent the leaders from growing, thus making it easy to care for. You can also grow corn along a fence line, make a row of carrots and radishes in your flower beds.
My father-in-law had a walnut tree and pear tree; every year he would plant watermelons underneath the trees. This gave the watermelons shade and also covered the bare spots in the lawn. So remember, that you can grow edible plants in different places, not just your flower beds.
