Fun Car Games: Verbal Games
Fun car games have been played since the early days of cars and they are a great way to pass the time when you have a long journey ahead of you. Kids especially enjoy playing fun car games, but they are really for any age.
Verbal games are something that everyone, even the driver, can participate in. They are fun and can also be a great brain exercise. Here are a few popular ones that I played as a child:
ABC Games
Animal ABCs: Take turns naming animals that start with each letter of the alphabet. There are actually two ways to do this. You can just go in order, with Person 1 saying an animal that starts with "A" and Person 2 saying an animal that starts with "B", etc.
The second version of the Animal ABCs is to name as many animals that start with A as possible. When you can't think of one in 30 seconds, you are out of the round. The last person who can name an animal within the letter is the winner.
ABC Signs: This is one of those fun car games that requires some visual acuity. You have to find each letter of the alphabet, in order, on signs along the road. License plates and signs on trucks don't count. You also have to shout the letter out and be prepared to prove that you saw it. The first person to find all 26 letters wins.
Fun Games
Truth or Dare: This is a classic party game that can be adapted to the car. Take turns being "it". It has to choose someone to ask "Truth or Dare?" The person selects one or the other.
For Truth, the person who is it will ask a question that the askee must respond to truthfully. This can be anything from "Do you pick your nose?" to "Have you ever spit on the sidewalk?"
For Dare, the person who is it has to dare the other to do something. For children, this should be carefully monitored by parents, since they can dare each other to do rather dangerous things!
20 Questions: In this game, one person thinks of an object and the remaining people have to guess what it is in just 20 questions. They can do this only by asking questions that can be answered by yes or no. For example, "Is it alive?" "No." etc.
Memory Games
The Packing Game: Start off by saying "I went on a trip and in my suitcase I packed . . ." Add an object that you packed in your imaginary suitcase. The next person in line has to repeat the phrase, with the first object, and add another item. See how far you can get without losing anyone. When someone can't remember an object, they are out. The last person to remember all the objects is the winner.
