Fungus Nail Infection

Fungus nail infection (onychomycosis) normally affects adults, and normally more men than women. The older you are, the more likely you are to get the condition. It is often recognised by thickening and discolouring of the nail. The nail colour can become yellow, white, green or even black in colour.

In severe cases parts of the nail can crumble off, or even come completely away from the toe (or finger).

The most common cause of fungus nail infection (or fungal nail infection) is from a skin infection like atheletes foot. A type of yeast (candida) is one of the major contributors, but other factors can increase the chance of infection. These include damaging you nails, biting, smoking, having a weakened immune system, lots of hand washing and living in a warm, humid climate.

There are a number of ways of treating a fungus nail infection. You can give your nails treatement by taking antifungal medication by mouth. Although this can clear the condition completely, it can take several months and if you stop the treatment too early the infection can return. Another approach is to use an antifungal nail paint. This is not considered to be good as tablets, as paint has difficulty in getting into all of the infection.

Whatever type of nail cure you decide is best for you, it is important to keep up the fungus nail treatment until you are absolutely sure it has completely cleared.
