A Short History of G-Strings

G-strings have an interesting history. During the early part of the 20th century when burlesque shows were hugely popular, someone came up with the idea of this tiny garment.

The only people who wore g strings were those who were employed as “exotic dancers”, which are also known as strippers. The g string was all that was left on the body at the very end of the stripper’s act. Usually, it was taken off and the “dancer” finished her time on stage totally naked.

Nowadays, a g string is considered a mainstream mode of wearing undergarments. G strings have been worn in various parts of the world for more than 75,000 years. They were fashioned for males at first, and no female would ever have dreamed of putting one on.

Men in various African tribes were more than likely the first men to be seen wearing g-strings. Japanese men wore g strings as early as 2000 years ago for Sumo wrestling. Today, g-strings in the form of swimsuits are most commonly worn on the beaches of the world by both sexes.

Why Is It Called A G String?

Most people have a mental image of what g strings look like, but few people know why this tiny article of clothing is called a g string. No one has been able to decide which of these three explanations for this unusual name is correct. The theory that seems the most logical is the one that states that a group of Native Americans known as the Plains Indians wore a garment they called a “geestringi”.

This was a form of loincloth, similar to what we have all seen Indians wear in certain Western movies. This theory further claims that the English speaking settlers changed the pronunciation of this word to “ g string”.

Another thought is that g strings got their name from the term “girdle string” that was mentioned in an 1878 book by the name of Western Wiles. A sentence stated that boys wore a tight “geestring” around their waists, made out of one strip of cloth that was placed between the legs from the front of the body to the back. During that period, what this describes was also commonly known as a girdle.

There is also the theory that the name g string was taken from the lowest string on a violin, which musicians know as the g string. This theory takes the usual fit of a g string garment, low on the hips, and sees it comparatively in relation to the position of the instrument string.

Who Wears G Strings?

If you are a fan of wearing g strings, you are not alone. The choice of g-strings for underwear is a popular selection for both men and women. People sometimes may look aghast or giggle nervously at the thought of a man wearing a g-string as underclothing, but those fellows who have tried this variety just once are usually sold on their comfort.

It is claimed that the g strings do not ride up when worn beneath tight jeans as other types of men’s underwear can do. When questioned about their fondness for wearing a g-string as either underwear or swimwear, most people will state that they believe in wearing what is comfortable for them.

First time g -tring wearers do claim that the first time they wear the garment, it does feel a bit strange simply because they are not used to having a thin string of fabric tucked in between the cheeks of their buttocks. Taking a little extra time to experiment with the different styles and materials that g-strings are made out of can go a long way toward finding a comfortable g string that suits the way your body is made.

The small amount of lightweight fabric that goes into a g-string makes you feel as if you are really wearing nothing at all, and is extremely comfortable. There is no “underwear line” for either sex to worry about when wearing a g-string.

Make Sure You Are Buying A G String

So you have decided that you are going to at least try a g string. Choose your new item carefully, for there are undergarments that are made in a fashion similar to the g string that are not the real thing. It is easy to get confused when there are alternates such as v-strings and thongs. In general, g strings come in several different styles, such as the invisible g string, the micro g string, and the pearl g string. Make sure you are purchasing the right g string for you.

"It is claimed that the g strings do not ride up when worn beneath tight jeans as other types of men’s underwear can do." -- for that alone I should try a G-String, tired of putting on a good looking pear of jeans and having my boxer-briefs ride all the way up with the jeans as I pull them on. Fashion Failure!

I thought you had developed an interest in stringed instruments - I did once play the violin and the G-string is usually the easiest string to tune, but when it goes out its a real pain. I always thought that this type of G-string looked terribly uncomfortable and have never worn one!

It's always interesting to hear how these things come about. It seems the less material the higher the cost.

I like the one on the fifth picture most. However, the g-string on the second picture is absolutely stunning. I'll definitely have to get one of those for my GF.
