GARLIC

GOD provides HERBS for FOOD In the creation of the universe. He had also provided every thing necessary for the survival of mankind. And God said, "Behold, I have given you herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding to you it shall be meat" (Genesis 1:29).

In verse 30, God continues: "And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, where in there is life, I have every green herb for meat: and it was so."

There is only one verse recorded in the Bible which mentions garlic (Numbers 11:5):

"We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:"

HERBS

Herbs are plants having medicinal, culinary, or aromatic properties. God forsaw the necessity of healing herbs for mankind. Diseases abound and man is searching for ways to combat diseases. The garlic bulb is found to be most potent and versatile in treating diseases like infections, arthritis, cancer and heart disease. Garlic also boosts the immune system.

Approximately 3,000 years before the birth of Jesus Christ, man had used garlic for healing and herbalists have been writing about it for at least 2,000 years.

Garlic is common in Eastern countries. The Chinese and Thai use it in their cooking to flavour their dishes. The Crusaders brought it into Europe from Ascalon and it is known by the name of "shalot."

Several population studies conducted in China centered on garlic consumption and cancer risk. In one study, investigators found that frequent consumption of garlic and various types of onions and chives was associated with reduced risk of esophageal and stomach cancers, with greater risk reductions seen for higher levels of consumption (8). Similarly, in another study, the consumption of allium vegetables, especially garlic and onions, was linked to a reduced risk of stomach cancer (9). In a third study, greater intake of allium vegetables (more than 10 g per day vs. less than 2.2 g per day), particularly garlic and scallions, was associated with an approximately 50 percent reduction in prostate cancer risk (10).

Evidence also suggests that increased garlic consumption may reduce pancreatic cancer risk. A study conducted in the San Francisco Bay area found that pancreatic cancer risk was 54 percent lower in people who ate larger amounts of garlic compared with those who ate lower amounts (11).

In addition, a study in France found that increased garlic consumption was associated with a statistically significant reduction in breast cancer risk. After considering total calorie intake and other established risk factors, breast cancer risk was reduced in those consuming greater amounts of fiber, garlic, and onions (12).

HOW MUCH GARLIC TO TAKE?

How much garlic may be useful for cancer prevention?

  1. The National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, does not recommend any dietary supplement for the prevention of cancer, but recognizes garlic as one of several vegetables with potential anticancer properties. Because Furthermore, the active compounds present in garlic may lose their effectiveness with time, handling, and processing.
  2. The World Health Organization's (WHO) guidelines for general health promotion for adults is a daily dose of 2 to 5 g of fresh garlic (approximately one clove), 0.4 to 1.2 g of dried garlic powder, 2 to 5 mg of garlic oil, 300 to 1,000 mg of garlic extract, or other formulations that are equal to 2 to 5 mg of allicin.

MY 98 YEAR OLD UNCLE EATS FRESH GARLIC EVERY DAY

Uncle Khoon Leong, my mother's brother is 98 years old and is still alive. He outlives his wife, a son and a daughter who died of breast cancer. He had a comparatively easy life for he succeeded my grandfather when he died as manager of a company called Soon Foh owned by my grandfather and his cousin collecting tin ore from the local Chinese tin miners and selling to the big British company in Menglumbu, 3 miles from Ipoh, the capital of Perak, Malaysia. Perak is the called the "Silver (tin) State" of Malaysia.

My grandfather employed the town band master, Mr. Dorado to give his children music lessons, violin lessons for the boys and piano lessons for the girls. When uncle was younger, he played tennis on one of the three tennis courts in grandmother's house with his brothers in law and friends. He keeps himself fit and does not eat out often in restaurants like our family.

After he returned from a tour of Europe with his friends, he spoke about the places he visited. What struck me was the Blue Grotto on the Isle of Capri and I knew that when I had the chance I would visit it. Praise and thank the Lord, I have the chance to visit the Blue Grotto.

"The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) is a noted sea cave on the coast of the island of Capri, Italy. Sunlight, passing through an underwater cavity and shining through the seawater, creates a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern.

The beauty of the Blue Grotto was described in 1826 by the German writer August Kopisch. Since then the Blue Grotto has become the emblem of the island of Capri. The grotto was well known by the Romans, as proved by the antique statues which were found in the Grotto. This discovery, the remains of an ancient landing place and the work on an underground tunnel, create an image of a natural cavern adorned by statues. The grotto was known to the locals under the name of Gradola, after the nearby landing place of Gradola, but it was avoided because it was said to be inhabited by witches and monsters."

Uncle Khoon Leong could afford to spend $500,000 (Malaysian) on his daughter's cure for cancer, but to no avail. Money cannot buy happiness or peace for Uncle Khoon Leong. She was sent to Singapore for treatment about 400 miles away from Ipoh where she lived. Singapore is supposed to have better cancer treatment than Ipoh.

CANCER GENE IN THE FAMILY

My grand parents had 5 sons and 5 daughters. There seems to be a cancer gene in the family. Three sons were lost to cancer, one to cancer of the throat, another to cancer of the rectum and a third to cancer of the stomach. Two of the daughters, Foo Siew Yeng and Foo Lean Yeng died from cancer of the breast.

THE NEXT GENERATION

Of the next generation, the third son of my eldest uncle also died of cancer. My cousin, Dolly Cheah, daughter of Siew Yeng died of skin cancer and her sister, Nancy died from breast cancer. Lean Yeng's third daughter Jenny succumbed to breast cancer.

Our family thought that we did not inherit the cancer genes but were proven wrong. There are now four members in our family having four different types of cancer. Three are still battling against cancer of the ovary, prostate glands and colon. The one with the breast cancer did not survive.

It is tragic that so many of my relatives die from different forms of cancer. However, many of us are Christians and trust in the Lord to see us through the rough times. We understand that tribulation and trials are common to all men, but as Christians we are stronger and better to weather the storm. We do not understand why 2nd uncle is still alive at 98 years and he survives while two of his children left the world so much earlier. His habit of eating one fresh garlic clove must have helped him. We knew of uncle's habit of eating fresh garlic but we still did not follow his example. Garlic has a pungent smell if eaten raw and if eaten regularly, the body reeks of the smell. It may put most people off because of the smell. However, garlic greens are pleasant to eat if stir fried with beef or chicken.

God provided herbs for food for mankind right from the start of creation. Now man is slowly finding out the benefits of God's grace. Thank God for His mercy and love of mankind for providing herbs to cure diseases.

I've read quite a bit about the benefits of garlic...but never heard of anyone eating fresh raw garlic before! How severe is this 'reeking smell' his body has? And for the rest of us...garlic tablets are not supposed to cause these types of odors. But I do use fresh garlic, sauteed or roasted, in my cooking quite a bit. YUM!

I know about a 90 plus person near my house who chews on raw garlic every morning on empty stomach. He is also doing quite a lot of walking every morning. He is totally healthy. No diabetes or hypertension either and no digestive disorders. I do not know about the odour though.

Nice hub.

desert blondie,

Thanks for the comments. Try eating a clove of fresh garlic and someone facing you can smell the garlic. Garlic tablets do not smell, but I think fresh garlic is more potent than tablets.

When my sister used garlic in her cooking, my other sister would comment and said that the clothes she wore also smell of garlic.

God bless.

Kulsum Mehmood,

Thanks for your comments that corroborate my testimony of my uncle. If you try taking a clove of raw garlic, you will feel the smell yourself.

I have not tried fresh garlic but I love it cooked. Last night I talked to a retired nurse who takes two cloves a day, one in the daytime and the other at night. She eats it raw with rice and finds it tart (not sure how to describe it).

The Chinese restaurant that I go to fried the garlic lightly in oil and put it together with cooked spinach, soy sauce and slices of beef. I always ask for more cooked garlic.

einron, even though I know alot of the health benefits and healing properties of garlic, I really enjoyed reading your Hub because of the personal storyof your 98 year old uncle and how he is no doubt benefiting from eating garlic.

Thanks laringo.

Thanks for your comments. There no doubt that my uncle benefits from eating raw garlic. A retired nurse friend of mine just told me a few days ago, she is eatig raw garlic twice a day and she chews it together with rice to take away some of the taste, but she knows it is beneficial for her health.

Many people do not like the smell of garlic left behind after eating raw or cooked garlic.

Great hub Einron, there are too many things in nature that helps us, we seem to be getting away and away from it with modern medicines, which has more side effects. I love garlic also but I cook it. Since it is too hard I don't know how it will taste like when eating raw. Maybe we can steam the garlic along with rice (Persians do that) and eat it and still retain taste, flavor and nutrients. Long live your Uncle, I hope your other relatives also follow his example at least eat more garlic in other ways.

Your comments are most welcome. I hope that my uncle will live on longer. Unfortunately, my other relatives do not follow his advice. Garlic bread is yummy. Everybody seems to love it.

When I am in a Chinese restaurant, I always ask for more roasted garlic sprinkled in steamed spinach or young bok choy.

Wonderful hub!

Fruits are the highest energetics on this planet! Health is energy. We have flows of energy: lymph, blood and nerve. Fruits pull like nobody's business. Add some botanicals to the mixture for a real pull. Great lymph movers: lemons, grapes, apples.

I know this recipe that completely masks the pungency of garlic:

1-1-1/2 cups sunflower seeds (depending on desired consistency)

juice of 4 lemons

1 TBS raw Celtic sea salt

1 crown of garlic

1 cup water

Blend until smooth and creamy.

Great with chips n dip: Pico de Gallo and vegetable flax crackers. Better than Mexican food.

The light of God in me salutes the light of God in you!

Inspiring faith of God's right-hand promises: Health.

Many thanks for the recipe to mask the pungency of garlic. I read somewhere or someone told me that you can chop the garlic clove and swallow it without chewing. That's all.

DaMan, Thanks for the tip. I did check up on Dragon Grass and found some news on cancer cure. The video on wheat grass is spoken mostly in Philippino language and I cannot understand it.

If I find more evidence on it, I may write about it.

I started eating raw organic garlic last year after I was diagnosted with Lupas and Reumatoid arthritis. I was a sceptic more than most, but today I take no medication and I am pain free. Try cruching raw garlic with a cheap plastic or metal pill crusher instead of chewing it and swollow with full glass of water. Also after you crush the garlic wait 15 minutes before consuming to get the full benifit.

Thank you very much for your now pain free Lupus and Rheumatoid arthrits.  Is'nt God merciful and good to those who listen to His words of love and compassion by eating herbs? All glory to the Lord God.

Spread thin coat of nut butter on slice of carrot raisin mana bread, spread on healthly coat of garlic/ginger mix, and lightly (to taste, minimize sting of mixture) spread on natural, non sweetened jam/perserve. Eat open faced for breakfast. Good for lymphs, warm feeling. I have this everymorn.(Have come to crave it now) Can feel the body parts where the garlic is working on....God is Good

Been playing around with adding more garlic and ginger into diet. Came up with and enjoy daily this pate with my veggie sushi and salads. Three lg cloves garlic, large portion ginger, raisins, dates (sometimes with persimmons and or green apples)chop or puree in food processor or veg grinder. Can vary by adding small liquid like lemongrass tea or apple juice to make mixture a thick liquid and have as a sweet and spicy raw pudding. Yumm ! I love this combination. I am developing a desire for the warm, sweet, spicey flavors of garlic, ginger, lemongrass and lime leaves, horseradish, and daikon and arugala is new to me but yum I like the peppery flavor. I have noticed much improvements in my various symptoms which Ive battled for most of my adult life. Wish I impliminted these earlier in my life. Could have avoided alot of pain and illness. Better late than never. Ever amazed and in Awe of Gods patience and persistance with me and instruction of how to be responsible with the body, health and life he blessed me with! I am learning the hard way of how not to take for granted these generous gifts! Our God is so amazing, alive and active in our lives if we would just stop and notice! God is so very Good!
