Oktoberfest will once again be celebrated in Munich, Germany on September 20 to October 5 this year. With the multitude of food and drinks offered on this sixteen-day event, it is a good idea to study German to be able to pronounce them.

Food and Dishes

The "wurst", or sausage is the first thing that comes to mind during Oktoberfest. To be able to eloquate the names of the various sausages, it's best that you must learn German. You should be able to say and tell the difference between the bratwurst (beef, veal, and/or pork), bockwurst (lamb, chicken, turkey, pork with chives, white pepper, parsley, and paprika), knackwurst (beef or pork with fresh garlic), and the world-famous frankfurter.

You'll also get the opportunity to sample noodles other than spaghetti. You can try their cheese noodles served with fried onions, the kasespatzle. You will be surprised how it's an ideal accompaniment to beer when it is just made from basic ingredients like spices, milk, salt, flour, and eggs. And mind you, there are various types of spatzle, all of them delicious and all them demanding that you learn German to sufficiently express your appreciation.

You will also have a taste of sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), hendl (roasted chicken), and Apfelpfannenkuchen (apple pancakes). If you believe learning German for these Bavarian dishes is too much, think again when you get to the beers.

It's All About the Liquor

More than the costumes, music, and food, the Oktoberfest is known for its beers and wines. Be able to differentiate the many beers and wines in the fourteen tents of the event by studying the German language.

With high carbon dioxide contents, the sekt is made fizzier than most sparkling wines. Look for the Deutscher Sekt if you know your wines well. Or, you can look for sekt formulated from Riesling, Pinot gris, and Pinot blanc grapes for that extremely special occassion.

You can also get intoxicated on German wheat beer. To mention some of the numerous varieties, there's the Weizenstarkbier (strong wheat beer), Dunkelweizen (dark wheat), Kristallweizen (crystal wheat, and the unfiltered and traditional Hefeweizen. You have to learn speak German as quickly as you can, lest you mix up one with the other; the names hint at the alcohol strength - the darker the wheat component, the higher the alcohol levels, usually.

Most of all, get drunk on the marzen (pale lager), a specially-brewed Oktoberfestbier. There are numerous more varieties of wines and beers served during the Oktoberfest, with the Weinzelt tent offering as many as fifteen wines!

Obviously, you do not need to study German to revel in Oktoberfest. But it is definitely an excellent option if you want to make the most out of the event.
