Erectile Dysfunction

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is when you can't get or keep an erection that's adequate for satisfactory sexual activity.

Experiencing ED once in a while is normal. If, however, you have ED episodes for more than three months, or it's a recurring problem, you should see your doctor. Treatments are available.

In the U.S. between 15 to 30 million men have ED.

What causes ED?

ED is most often caused by physical problems. Disease, surgical procedures or injuries can damage the nerves, arteries, smooth muscles and fibrous tissues that play important roles I getting and maintaining an erection.

ED can also be caused by chronic alcoholism, smoking and lack of exercise.

25 percent of ED cases may be caused by prescription drug side effects.

Only 10 to 20 percent of ED cases are linked to psychological factors such as low self esteem, fear of sexual failure, stress, anxiety, guilty and unresolved relationship issues.
