Mental Golf Preparation
How do you prepare for a great golf game? How do you well do you need to condition yourself for the game? Beginners think that golf is an easy game because all you have to do is stand over the ball, swing the putt and hit it. What they don’t know is that merely standing over the ball is already difficult. Golf does not allow you to have cumulative thinking unlike other sports wherein you wait for the ball, do your thing and give the ball to the opponent without thinking what to do next – reliant on how the opponent would handle the ball. But in golf, you’re mind is flooded with many thoughts. You think about where to put your hand and what is the right intensity in hitting the ball in order to put it in the hole. These thoughts plus other interruptions like someone coughing could be overwhelming for the golfer. Thus, mental and physical preparation is a must before the game.
You can find a lot of tips on how to play a good mental golf game. Mental coaches are giving athletes inputs on how they can improve their games and how they can achieve consistency, confidence, concentration, and develop the right mental skills to have a winning form in every game. Here are some of the things you have to keep in mind before and during the game.
Visualization
Visualize regularly. Visualize moments when you are walking up to the ball, swinging and hitting it, and also the winning hole-in-one moments. Contemplate the feeling of making a good service and the great feeling of hitting the ball with a good swing. Stop worrying about a good golf style and form instead focus on the outcome – driving the ball to its hole.
Eat Wisely
There are instances when we are not “in the game” even if we have prepared a whole lot for the game. So it is imperative for you to improve your stamina. Take vitamins to improve your physical strength. You are what you eat and what you eat could affect your mental golf performance. Right diet contributes to a great play.
Relax your mind
Free your mind of the distractions and technicalities. Concentrate on having a relaxed disposition during the game. Do not over analyze your next move. Should there be wrong moves, do not dwell on it instead focus on the current shot. Do not let it discourage you.
While playing golf, you can be stressed out at times instead of having fun. So reprogramming your mind is a key to good golf game. So next time you go golfing with your friends, take a deep breath, focus, hit the putt, and enjoy the game.
Bobby Jones said it best...
"Golf is a game that is played on a
5 inch course - the distance between your ears."
A player should have the right strategy to complete and control the game.
