GoogleTalk was developed by the search engine company Google as an instant message program utilized through Gmail. At first, you could only use GoogleTalk via your Gmail interface but now you can download a program similar to AIM or Windows Live Messenger to keep in touch with Gmail contacts.

Since its release in 2005, GoogleTalk now boasts VOIP service as well. While the program itself is only available on the Windows platform, steps have been taken by Google to make it widely available. The use of the GoogleTalk widget, and the use of programs like Jabber, can make it easier for users to keep in touch through the platform. GoogleTalk has also integrated Orkut users into its fold so that users can interact across cross-platform IM programs.

GoogleTalk allows users to sync their "screenname," so to speak, with their e-mail account so they are alerted when they receive new mail. This eliminates the need for a third-party client, such as Outlook, to be opened along with not having to visit the Gmail site itself to check e-mail frequently. Through Google's MusicTrends network, you can also display the currently played song on your computer while you listen to music throughout the day.

The program itself is definitely a work in progress, but it allows for a bit of flexibility where other IM programs do not. Since most other lite or express versions of instant messengers require you to use Javascript and other scripts to run from the web, you can access your GoogleTalk account from the Gmail web site which allows for an easier experience keeping in touch with folks. This gives GoogleTalk a leg up where programs, like AIM, do not always allow users to sign in over the web depending on what type of computer and Internet connection they have.

Giving GoogleTalk a chance is definitely worth it, especially if you use Gmail day in and day out. If you are looking for a way to keep in touch on the go, Gmail is the simplest way to do just that. The more users that sign up and begin using the program, the more Google will be motivated to further development and take on the big names in the instant messaging game.

I've never tried this before, but it looks like it serves many helpful functions :)
