Wanna buy a gps tracking system? You're not alone!

This ever more popular type of product has gone a long way since it first started being available to the public. And the latest generation of gps tracking system line of products are mature, and rather inexpensive.

Let's just go quickly over the possible use for such systems...

  • It allows you to know the exact location of your home vehicle. This means that your husband or wife can't lie to you about where they are.

  • It allows you to find out if you are right to be suspicious of your partner, thinking he or she may be cheating on you

  • someone stole your car? no problem...

  • You can monitor your newly licensed teen driving behavior and speed, and whereabouts.

  • Police and government security services use this in their investigations

"So how does a gps tracking system works?"

The quick overview is that you can track the location of things using the constellation of many gps satellites orbiting around the earth. You simply place the tracking unit in a car, for example. And Those satellites will beam back to earth their exact location.

What You Need To Know Before Buying

As with most type of products, there are more than one category to consider. Here there are two main categories actually.

  • Data loggers

  • The real time type

Data Loggers:

The data loggers are little devices you put in the car you want to monitor. The device will then record at a specified time interval, its location at that moment as gps coordinates. No matter where it is on earth. You then need to go retrieve the data logger from the vehicle and connect t to your computer using a usb cable.

The data it has recorded is then transferred to your computer and shows up on a map on your screen, letting you know where the vehicle was, and at what time.

The downside of this type of gps tracking system is obvious: While the device is in the vehicle, you have no idea where that vehicle is or where it's heading. Only when you can get access to that vehicle again, retrieve the device and connect it to your computer, can you find out about where the vehicle was and where it went. It's not real time. It is similar to "black boxes" installed on aircrafts.

The Real Time Type:

The real time type allow you to follow the vehicle in real time, or near real time, instead of having to retrieve the device, like you need to do with data loggers.

Basically, the data from the monitoring device is sent in real time to a server of the company providing that monitoring service. All you have to do is log on to a special "member" page on the internet, and from there you can follow where your vehicle is in real time, or near real time.

Some models makes it possible to receive that data directly to your cell phone.

Needless to say, the real time type of gps tracking system is more expensive. The real time capability is priceless if you ask me. It always depends on what use you're making of this car tracking device though.

If it's to know the driving behavior of your teen. Such as the speed, where he/she goes, etc, then you may not need the real time capability. Retrieving the data logger and knowing all the information only afterward may be just fine.

Simply analyze your REAL needs, and make a smart buying decision based on that.

Whatever type you choose to buy, you will finally be able to know exactly where your vehicle is and/or has been, thanks to the latest generation of gps tracking system technology.
