How you can save money and fuel

Most people have cars; some have more than one. But most people are also running those cars inefficiently meaning they burn more fuel and cause more Co2 to be added into the atmosphere. For anyone that wants to reduce their carbon footprint, but still needs to run a car then this hub is for you.

So what can you do to help save money, fuel and the planet? Here are a great few simple tips to get the most out of your motor.

Top tips for car drivers

  • Drive smoothly - charging around like a boy racer and breaking excessively can use up to 60% more fuel, and you look like an idiot too!
  • Don't rev the engine - you don't need to and you just waste fuel.
  • Keep to the speed limit - doing 80mph on the motorway will use between 10 and 15 percent more fuel than keeping to the speed limit (and it is illegal!). Even driving at 70 mph uses 20-30% more fuel than at 50mph.
  • Check your tires - not only will this save your life and that of others but it will help reduce your fuel consumption.
  • Don't use the air conditioning, especially when you don't need to. If you drive at speed with your windows open this also increases drag and fuel consumption.
  • Take off that top box when it's not needed - the extra drag just uses more fuel.
  • Ditch the car for that short trip to the shop - you'll feel healthier if you walk, jog or cycle and it help the environment too.
  • Keep your car in good order and get it serviced regularly. A well tuned engine will be more efficient and save you money too.

The future of fuel?

There is no way around it, fuel prices are spiralling out of control. Added to that the clamour over cleaner, greener cars there is no better time than to look into alternatives to petrol (gas). Here are some of the alternatives to petrol/diesel powered cars.

  • Electric or hybrid cars. The have a battery to help power the engine. The downsides are that they do not give as much speed as a fossil fuel driven car, they need charging on a regular basis and when you charge a battery using electricity you are using fossil fuels, again!
  • Biodiesel. This is a relatively new process of making diesel from vegetable oil. Once your engine is converted you can use biodiesel without hurting the environment. However the demand for crops to be converted into biodiesel is leading to a world wide food shortage in cereals.
  • Water for gas. Using a hybrid engine that burns water as well as normal fuel leading to reduced carbon emissions and lower fuel bills. Once the conversion on your engine has taken place you can fill up anywhere.
  • Compressed air powered cars. This has hit the headlines with an engineer in France developing an engine that will run on air. No emissions, very little cost and high power for those speed freaks. Definitely the car of the future.

Like with so much of 'environmentally friendly' stuff it is a lot of common sense rather than major life changes. You can be green and still have a car, just make it work for you, not the other way round.
