THE BEGINNING

STILL GROWING

Watermelons

Well it is like this I have had the most terrible time trying to grow these melons. I need some advice. Maybe I will get comments to help.

This is what happened, well the plants grew. they bloomed, they developed melons, then as they grew, they would get about the size of a softball and they would rot on the tip away from the stem. I thought well maybe not enough water or maybe to much. But several people say they have the same problem. So I researched. about the water that is and the soil, I followed all the rules that apply.

I was watering every day, along with the other vegetables((which did fine)) and after I read up on the melons I thought maybe they are getting too much water. So now that all the other part of the garden is gone. I have left the darn things alone. Now they are growing except when we get a lot of rain some of the immature ones get that same rotten tip on them. I dont think it is the water myself but I dont quiet know what it is.It is a mystery to me.

These listed in the photo eventually died however I didnt know I would be writing this so I dont have Photo's I will update as soon as I do.

OTHER PROBLEMS

Ok. Now for the other problem look at he neck. Why is the watermelon growing a neck? This makes no sense to me. And then it will split in the neck and of course rot. Crazy Crazy Crazy.

NORMAL ONE HERE

Well see now we have a normal one these came after we just let it all go. We stopped weeding and watering and just let the things do what they wanted now we have a few growing and if we weed then the plants die because the sun, so we just left well enough alone.

What we got was sweet just small

Well we only got about 3 out of about 50. They were small but the 3 we got were very sweet. Maybe next year will be better. I hope so

The problem with your rotten ended melons is known as blossom end rot and can have different sources but the main ones are humidity, too much water creates a overly moist area, make sure plants are in sandy soil and try cultivating frequently to increase aeration. I would only water once or twice a week and not at all if your not having a drought. BER(blossom end rot) can also be carried by insects like squash bugs and cucumber beetles. Be sure to remove melons that have it immediately and dispose of somewhere far from other plants as it is highly contagious. The bottle necked melons result from inconsistent water supply. Try not to water except in extreme dry weather, especially once melon plants have matured. Be sure that vines are not tampered with in their mature state because this can cause bends or kinks in the vine resulting in inadequate water supply and bottle necked melons. oh and i'd lose the trellis, just plant further apart. Be sure soil is sandy.

This advice is sooo great! Melinda your watermelon with the neck made laugh :))) So funny, me and my husband were laughing for almost 3 minutes. Anyways, I learned something now, I want to plant watermelons in my mom's garden. It's fun! I deffinitely want to try it.
