Guide to Credit Card Debt Relief
64What is credit card debt relief?
Credit card debt relief is basically your creditor giving the credit card holder an easing of payment either by lowering monthly payments or reducing the amount of the credit card debt. The one thing you need to keep in mind about credit card debt relief is that not every creditor is going to be willing to work with you. Because not every creditor is willing to work with you you need to be prepared when you make the call to discuss credit card debt relief.
So why would a credit card company be willing to offer you credit card debt relief? The answer is pretty simple credit card companies know that if you end up going into bankruptcy chances are very unlikely that they will receive any of the money. By working with you and reducing some of your debt they have a much better chance of getting some money from you.
There are going to be three point I will be covering. The first point I am going to cover is if credit card debt relief right for you, the second point is how to prepare to negotiate with your creditor. And the final point that I cover is what to actually doing the negotiations.
Is Credit Card Debt Relief for Me?
One of the first things you will have to determine is if it's the right thing for you to do. There are some people who are better off filing for bankruptcy. The reason for this is simple, they just don't have the right mindset to actually commit to the agreement that they have set with their creditor. Though bankruptcy is not the best choice for some it is the only choice.
When I refer to mindset I am talking about is the fact that some people cannot commit themselves to making payments that they have agreed to. For these people starting out with a clean slate may be the best option.
So if you think that credit relief is for you then one of the first things you need to do is to get ready to negotiate with your creditor.
Getting Ready
To get ready to negotiate with your creditor get all the bills that you owe and have them ready and in front of you. You'll want to know the amount that you owe on each credit card bill and the interest rate that you had been paying.
The second thing you want to do to get ready is to have a budget prepared. What the budget will help you do is help you know how much you can comfortably pay your creditor. In order to have a chance at credit card debt relief the creditor will want to know what you will be able to pay him.
Make sure when you prepare your budget that it is realistic. If is not realistic chances are you will not stick to it and you will end up not paying the amount that you have agreed to. You may end up breaking the agreement with your creditor the credit card relief help they have extended you may no longer be available.
Negotiating Credit Card Debt Relief
Once you have your budget and all your bills in front of you it is time to call the creditor. The first thing that they will try to do when you're on the phone with them is they will try to collect money from. Do not let them. Say firmly that what you want is to negotiate a credit card relief settlement. Explain to them the your current financial situation and state what your willing to pay.
During the negotiations with your creditor please remember to be polite and factual. Do not raise your voice, Do not use foul language and above all do not lie. If the creditor does not want to settle with you ask to speak to someone above then. You have to keep in mind that the creditor wants to get his money and they know if they can't get it all they will try and settle for some.
Credit card debt relief I said before is not for everyone but if you decide that it is for you then I highly recommend that you be prepared. First of all determined if you are suited for credit card relief, make sure you get ready to negotiate by preparing your documents and your budget, and during the negotiations keep your cool, stay focused and what you are trying to accomplish, and be polite.
