83Natural Hair Treatments
When I was a little girl, my mother would lay me on the kitchen counter to wash my hair. My head rested on her hand, hovering over the sink while she shampooed my fine, blonde curls. This was before the advent of creme rinses and conditioners. Mom always finished the job with a vinegar rinse, adding a little of it to the water in the sink and cupping it over my head. Once I grew up, that experience got me thinking about what other hair home remedies there were.
At the time, I had no idea why my mother put vinegar in my hair. Maybe it was because we had sulfur water. Perhaps she liked the fact that I worried about smelling like salad dressing. Turns out that it was the latter. Vinegar softened the hard water and rinsed the shampoo out of my hair better.
I've learned a lot about using various plants and household products for hair since them. Below are some home remedies and natural hair treatments that invite you to try for yourself.
By the way, once my hair dried, I couldn't smell the vinegar anymore.

Organic, Naturally Sun-Dried Rosemary (Rosmarino)
Price: $9.99
|
Warm Oil Conditioner for Dry Hair
Mix together in a small pot one cup of light, mildly scented extra virgin olive oil with half a cup of dried rosemary leaves. Warm on top of the stove, then remove from the heat and cool to room temperature. Apply to your hair in sections with cotton balls, ensuring that you cover your entire scalp. Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap, then wrap your head in a towel. Leave on for half an hour, then wash with a mild herbal shampoo. Repeat lathers as many times as necessary to remove the oil. You don't need to use a conditioner with this natural treatment for hair. Repeat monthly to keep your hair moisturized and shiny.
Pre-Shampoo Tonic
This one is really easy. Just dilute some lemon juice with water and massage into your scalp at least once a week before shampooing. This will lighten the colour of your hair and condition your scalp. This is also a good natural treatment for dandruff.
Shampoo Substitute
Massaging a beaten egg into your scalp twice a week will keep your hair healthy looking and shiny. Rinse with vinegar water and then again with plain water.
It doesn't get more natural or 'home remedy' than this.

Marshmellow Herbal Tea
Price: $8.99
|
Quick Hair Rinse
Another natural hair treatment that's easy-peasy. Make 2 cups of marshmellow tea and let cool. Rinse through your hair after shampooing.
Now, doesn't that sound easy? This is a great dry hair home remedy.

Why, thank-you, Dohn! I also find home remedies fascinating. I truly enjoy the topic very much.
You are welcome re C.A. I emailed her last night and let her know that you had been worried about her. I'm glad that she got in touch with you. :)
These are really good tips, and best part is all remedies are very easy to try. Thanks for the hub Shirley.
My Mum use vinigar to rinse as we were brunettes. She swore by adding lemon juice to the rinse for blond hair.
Anujagarwal, thank-you. Yes, it is easy to try home remedies and you aren't out much money at all if you don't like one of them. Thanks for coming by!
Hi, Ethel. We've missed you in the HubMob lately.
Once I was grown up, I switched to lemon juice at the times I was blonde, which is summertime. :) I think my mom was trying to get my hair soft enough with the vinegar so that she could get a brush through my curls/frizz. Vinegar is also supposed to be good for banishing static, don't know if that what she was going for as well or not.
Thanks for coming by, Ethel!
I had almost forgotten that my mother used to rinse my hair with vinegar as well, and whenever outbreaks of lice would occur at school, she would douse my head with mineral turpentine! I have read since then that turpentine is not really effective against lice but neither I nor any of my sisters or brother ever got lice!
Hi, Nemingha! I wonder if vinegar was used in most households before cream rinse and conditioner were invented? It seems that a lot of us had that rinse when we were little.
Amazingly, although my sister and I attended a 3 room school house in a rural area, we never got head lice. Not sure why but I'm very happy that we didn't. So, I can't speak to the turpentine. Hope no one lit a match around you afterward. :)
Thanks for reading and commenting, Nemingha.
Pre-Shampoo Tonic sounds nice and easy. I will apply it today and see... Thanks
Great Hub Shirley.....I wonder iof there are any home remedies for a head like mine with little hair left....lol
Shamelabboush, that's great! Hope you like the results. Thanks for coming by.
Hi, Rob. Maybe I'll see if I can find recipes for head wax and hairgrowth. It's nice to have options. :)
Great info! I knew of the vinegar because my mother used it, too. Ironically also over the kitchen sink. But I have not heard of the others. Thank you. I'll have to try them.
Hi, RGraf! I'm beginning to think that everyone's mother used vinegar, now. Guess it was the best thing in the pre-cream (creme?) rinse world.
Good luck with trying the hair home remedies, hope they work well for you.
Thanks for coming by. :)
