Hair Loss

Hair loss is a very common problem encountered by most people today. It generally indicates the deficiency of vital vitamins in the body. These nutrients are generally taken in by the body from the food we consume. However, sometimes, the body may lose the ability to absorb necessary nutrients from the food. In such cases, additional supplements of these nutrients should be provided to the body in the form of tablets or syrups till the balance in the body is restored.

There may also some other reasons for hair loss. Hair loss could be due to stress, medication, hormonal imbalance etc. DHT and male pattern baldness are closely related to each other. The DHT has a very bad effect on the hair follicles, which slows down the growth of hair or stops hair growth completely. In this article will discuss only vitamin aspects of hair loss.

Benefits of Vitamins to Hairs

  • Vitamins hinder the production of DHT (di-hydro testosterone) - one of the principal cause that trigger hair loss.
  • Vitamins revitalize damaged hair follicles and thereby promote hair growth.
  • Vitamins nourish and heal the scalp.

Vitamins for Hair Loss

A balanced diet is necessary for supplying adequate amounts of nutrients, minerals and vitamins to every part of our body. Lack of a proper diet often results in hair loss. Hence, hair loss can be treated by intake of dietary supplements, like minerals and vitamins, especially the B Vitamins (B5, B6, and niacin), Biotin, Inositol and Folic Acid.

B-Vitamins

Natural sources of vitamin B are like beans, peas, cauliflower, soy beans, and eggs that are very important for the health of the scalp and hair. Vitamins B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), and B6 (pyridoxine) should be taken as nutritional supplement for treating hair loss. Folic acid is a type of B vitamin (B9) that delays the onset of grey hair, and is useful in preventing hair loss.

Biotin

Biotin is essential for healthy hair and skin and may be effective in preventing male pattern baldness. Its natural sources are brown rice, brewer's yeast, sunflower seeds, green peas, soybeans, oats, lentils and walnuts. Supplements can also be used to counter excessive hair loss.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps in increasing the blood circulation in the scalp and ensuring that the hair follicles get adequate supply of nutrients. 2000mg would be the recommended daily dose.

Vitamin E

This vitamin aids in improving uptake of oxygen, which leads to better health of the scalp and hair. In relation to hair loss vitamin E acts as a carrier of oxygen in the blood and is vital to circulation generally and can help with circulation in the scalp. 1200 IU is considered a safe medicinal dose.

Other Vitamins

Inositol helps in keeping hair follicles healthy. To prevent graying of hair and hair loss, it is advisable to take Para-Aminoenzoic acid, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin B12. All these vitamins essential for healthy and lustrous hair can be derived from various fruits and vegetables such as pineapple, strawberries, kiwis, potatoes, vegetable oil, soybeans, dried beans, eggs, liver, rice, fish, turkey, and red meat.
