Haley Joel Osment became something of a household name after his portrayal of Cole Sear in M.Night Shyamalan’s the Sixth Sense. Cole has the unusual problem of seeing dead people. The scene in which he tells his psychiatrist (played by Bruce Willis) “I see dead people” became an immensely popular scene and has been parodied on numerous occasions. In the popular computer game Warcraft 3, one of the characters remarks “I eat dead people” in the same manner and tone as Osment’s line.
After his success in The Sixth Sense, he played the leading role in Steven Spielberg’s future sci-fi epic A.I. as the android David. He went on to do voice work in The Hunchback of Notre Dame II, the Country Bears, and the Jungle Book 2. He also does voice work in the insanely popular video game franchise Kingdom Hearts as the lead role Sora. The game is renowned for having a huge voice cast of popular celebrities.
In 2003, Osment starred in Secondhand Lions opposite Michael Caine and Robert Duvall. It was his first film where he was much noticeably older.
On July 20th, 2006, Haley Joel Osment’s was driving in his Saturn station wagon when he lost control and hit a brick mailbox base and flipped his car. He was charged with a DUI as well as misdemeanor marijuana possession. He was sentenced to three years probation and 60 hours in rehab for alcohol addiction. He also received a fine of $1,500 and a minimum requirement of 26 AA meetings over a six-month period.
In 2007, Osment will play the lead role in Home of the Giants, a drama about a high school journalist who gets caught in the middle of his best friend’s problems with a drug dealer.
