Online Etiquette - 2 Rules to Remember

So, you have learned about what a wonderful place the internet is, and though you are aware that it is possible to go without direct interactions in this place, you wish to communicate with people. If this is the case, you certainly do not wish to offend anyone, so it is important that you learn the language of the net, and proper etiquette.

A common mistake that people commonly make is that they too quickly differentiate the internet from real life, and drop their manners as soon as they log on. So the first thing to remember is that, even though you are not communicating face to face, a common level of respect should be maintained.

So the first rule and perhaps the most important, is being polite. In reality you would probably never respond to someone's statement if you are in disagreement, with profanity, so why should you online? In real life you are aware of the possible consequences of your manners; well you should be aware of them online too. Possible online consequences for sloppy manners are as follows:

- Getting your account banned or suspended. On websites such as MySpace and YouTube, sufficient annoyance of members could result in you being banned from the site, be it by your username, email, or IP address.

- Getting ignored by other members. On certain sites, members have the ability to mute other members. In which case everything that you type may be seen only by you.

- And probably the biggest consequence is getting hacked. Just as in the real world where you run the risk of annoying the wrong person, if you annoy the wrong person enough online they may come after your computer. This is common on many game sites.

Secondly there is sentence structure. You should be aware that when sentences are written in all capital letters, it is viewed as anger, and likewise generally triggers hostility in readers. So unless you have a genuine reason to type a statement in all capital letters, you should refrain from doing so. It is also a good idea to learn common acronyms, and if you encounter an acronym that you do not know in a conversation, look it up. Repeatedly asking someone the meaning of an acronym may prove a bit frustrating.
