If there was ever a fix in the house that everyone notices, it has to be hardwood flooring.  They are so much richer looking than carpeting and the overall value of the house immediately goes up.  If you are considering doing a hardwood floor install, there are a few things to consider though before moving forward.

Location, location, location

Where do you live – this is a question that people often overlook, but it is one of the most important to be addressed before shelling out any money. A home that is in a more temperature stable environment will be able to use a much wider array of products than someone that lives in a dry environment.

Storage

Storage space - if you want to get the job done quickly, you are going to have to move everything out of the rooms that you are doing.  If you are jockeying stuff back and forth as rooms are being completed, you will be adding a lot of time to the job.  If you are hiring someone to the flooring, this can add up really quick.  If necessary, rent a portable storage container that you can put everything into and then knock out the job in a couple of days.

Choose the Right Shade Based On Traffic

Traffic areas in the home – this really needs to be looked early on in the process.  The reason being that you do not want to choose a light color if spots that are going to be done have a lot of foot traffic.  The lighter shade will not stand up well to this and can end up much worse for the wear in a very short period of time.  This can lead to some very costly repairs.  You are better off going a little bit darker if the traffic on the floors is anticipated to be heavy.

Choose Your Wood Wisely

Make sure you see the wood – you are going to come across some great deals on the internet, but can you really trust a picture of something like this?  If you have ever made one trip to a lumber yard, you know how great something can look from afar and how horrible it can turn out to be in person.  Inspect everything personally before you make the purchase because once you sign on the dotted line, it’s yours.

As you can see, a hardwood floor install is about more than just laying down some floor boards.  You have going to have to do some research and educate yourself on the whole process.  You should do this even if you are hiring out the job as you want to make sure that you get what you pay for.
